Burnham Institute at Epcot?

by on August 31, 2006

In a fascinating story, Epcot seems to have picked up a new sponsor, or rather, has begun sponsoring a nonprofit organization.

The Burnham Institute is a biomedical nonprofit research organization, primarily cancer research, and it was looking to establish a new lab location. This sort of location/facility means lots of money in new jobs and such for the local area. In general it’s a good thing, but especially for other businesses.

Disney was brought into the whole process of winning the company over, and decided to offer an exhibition space, free of charge, to Burnham. What exactly it entails is unknown, but a release from Burnham Institute mentions (roughly) “Tens of millions of dollars in free advertising at Epcot at Walt Disney World over the next decade.” If this translates to a simple Innoventions style exhibit or maybe something bigger is unknown.

Castle Gold Going-Away

by on August 30, 2006

For the next several months, a crane will be in place near Cinderella Castle at the Magic Kingdom to remove the golden trim and decorations.

The golden ribbon, statues, garland, and giant magic mirror were added as part of the “Happiest Celebration on Earth” celebrating 50 years of Disney theme parks and Disneyland’s 50th birthday.

Without delays, the crane is expected to be removed just prior to Christmas.

Contemporary Concept Artwork

by on August 23, 2006

We stumbled across these pieces of conceptual artwork hanging on refurbishment walls on the 4th floor concourse at the Contemporary recently. Feel free to ignore the glare from the nearby windows and “ghosts” from us and other passerbys.

The refurbishment walls themself (not pictured of course) have been scaled back dramaticly on the concourse from prior work, leaving a large open area where the Pin Station once stood. The seating kiosks have been stripped to reveal the original planters planters too. Small refurbishment walls remainas they’re apparently adding a single element at a time.

The second shot reveals that the Mary Blair mural is intend to be left fully with new carpet and coloring set to match it better then the current scheme. Also, the trees in the pictures seem to be a nod to the original design of the resort which featured large plexiglass panel trees. For those with poor eyes (or who can’t tell from our poor photography – it’s ok, we forgive you) the trees in the concept art reach to about the monorail level and are sort of wispy and leaf-less, with lights or something else sparkly/glowing on them.

In the “Most Frequent” columns, parks in bold are the ones we’d bet on if we had to predict what some future day’s EMH schedule would be.

The parks’ most frequent EMH assignments have remained almost consistent since we looked at this first earlier this year. Major changes since then are that the Animal Kingdom has emerged as the clear winner on Monday mornings, and the Studios on Monday evenings.

Broadly speaking, it appears that morning EMHs are assigned to parks on their busiest days, and evening EMHs are assigned to parks on their slower days. (Our theory: morning EMHs are designed to benefit Disney resort guests by giving them a head start. Evening EMHs are designed to increase the park’s revenue by keeping people in longer.)

For example, Thursday is tied (with Monday) as the Magic Kingdom’s busiest day of the week, and it’s got the most frequent Thursday morning EMH. Similarly, Tuesday is Epcot’s busiest day, and it’s got the most frequent Tuesday morning EMH. Monday is the Animal Kingdom’s third-busiest day, and Saturday (where this idea doesn’t work) isn’t a busy day for any park.

Similarly, Friday’s one of Epcot’s slower days, and it’s got an evening EMH. Wednesday is the second-slowest day for the AK, and it’s got an evening EMH. Monday’s the third-slowest day for the Studios, and is somewhere in the middle for the Magic Kingdom. (The again, we have eight EMH assignments to fit into seven days – something has to give somewhere!)

Crowd blog updated

by on August 21, 2006

Updated the crowd blog to look at the most frequent EMH days for each park, using data from January 2006 through February 2007. These data are useful if you’re trying to predict the EMH schedule before Disney announces it (typically six months in advance).

by on August 20, 2006

Epcot’s Land pavilion’s boat ride “Living with the Land” will be closed from August 20 to September 16. We’ve heard the purpose of this rehab is to replace the human tour guides with automated, recorded spiels. We’ve also heard the FASTPASS machines may be removed.
