Electric Umbrella self service

by on February 24, 2007

Electric Umbrella will be changing to self-service beverage stations, similiar to the current condiment and toppings bars. Availability of refills is currently unknown, though Disney has at some locations (water parks) policed them by means of a barcode system on the beverage cups. The change is presumably to aid in handling growing crowds in Future World.

Kilimanjaro Safari changes

by on February 24, 2007

Minor changes are coming to Kilimanjaro Safaris at Animal Kingdom. The vehicles are adding a 9th row for additional capacity, and thus the loading areas are being reworked to accomodate them.

Rumors persist on the savannah though of further changes to the attraction in the coming months, including the removal of Mrs. Jobson’s character completely from the audio and the elimination of the poacher storyline. These rumors are entirely unconfirmed at the moment.

Crowd Levels And Wait Times At All Disney Parks

by on February 23, 2007

So far this year we’ve spent about three weeks looking just at crowd levels and wait times at all four parks. Actual crowd levels for 2007 are running +/- 15 minutes from our predictions, but approximately half of that comes from two days in January (the 24th and 25th) when Orlando was hit with wind, rain, and temperatures up to 15 degrees below normal. Below is a sample of our predictions and actual wait times from the parks:

Average Error

Excluding the two days with bad weather, our average error would be 11 minutes. We’ve collected much more data than this, and we’ll have it posted as soon as we can get it all keyed.

Crowd calendar – What we predicted versus what actually happened, for Jan and Feb 2007

by on February 23, 2007

We’ve spent several consecutive weeks in the parks so far this year, checking our crowd calendar predictions against what’s actually occurred. We should have those data up on the website in the next week, so bear with us while we sort through the thousands of pieces of data we collected.

A quick update on our predictions for Thursday, February 22:

Crowd level we predicted: 9 (Peak waits of 85 to 94 minutes at the Magic Kingdom headliner attractions)

What actually happened: 10 (Peak waits of 110 minutes at Space Mountain)

We were a little low on that one, but not by much. I think when we evaluate all of our predictions for this year, we’ll be within our current range of +/- 8 minutes, on average.

It appears that crowds are slightly higher this year than last. Also Thursday’s traditionally a busy day at the Magic Kingdom.

Finally, with Disney’s tinkering of Extra Magic Hours, it appears as if Wednesday may be the slowest day of the week at the Magic Kingdom. Still looking at that, so no definite conclusions yet.
