Contemporary Update

by on December 21, 2008

A quick rundown of the latest news from the Contemporary Resort overhaul: The California Grill will receive a rolling update over the next several months, allowing the restaurant to remain open during the process.

The Sundries shop will close, be rethemed and remodeled, then reopen renamed with a re-introduction of perishable foods for DVC guests in the adjacent tower (opening around May 2009).

Chef Mickey’s will be remodeled (it currently sticks out like a sore thumb in the overall look of the resort) and the Outer Rim bar is being rebuilt.

New rental vehicles coming to the parks

After settling a lawsuit over letting guests who use Segways into the parks, Disney has decided to allow a modified 4-wheel version into the parks and offering them for rental starting in April. The ESV, or Electronic Standing Vehicles, are very similar to Segways but have “training wheels” on the back to prevent tipping over.

Mouse World Radio now available on iPhone

by on December 18, 2008

Mouse World Radio streams Disney theme park audio over the Internet. It’s great to listen to while you’re doing housework or as background music at the office. In addition, iPhone users can now listen to Mouse World Radio on the go, courtesy of the free iTunes application FStream. Directions for listening are below. Reminder: It is totally awkward to be caught singing “Veggie Veggie Fruit Fruit” at a traffic light.

How To listen to Mouse World Radio from your iPhone and iPod Touch

You will need to install the free application FStream

Once installed start the application on the iPhone or the iPod Touch.

Go to the Favorites screen of the application and press ‘edit.’

Then press ‘Add new webradio.’

Then type in ‘Mouse World Radio’ as the name of the station.

In the URL, type “http://www.live365.com/play/torg0?tag=terra”

Then press ‘save.’ The ‘format’ and ‘bit rate’ should be auto-filled the first time you connect.

Go to the play page and click on the name that you set up and, Mouse World Radio should start streaming.

Also if you want to listen to it over the 3G network, change the ‘Cellular Network’ setting on the ‘More’ tab to ‘on.’

Hall of Presidents rennovation details

by on December 18, 2008

A recent story in the Orlando Sentinel has revealed some details of the renovation of the Hall of Presidents at the Magic Kingdom. The show typically closes when a new president is elected, but this time they are taking the opportunity to overhaul the show. Upgrades include new digital projections and LED lighting systems for better overall show quality. Also, the sequence which announces all the presidents in order is being rethought to make it easier to follow. Disney wants to secure the voice of the newest president to speak but that negotiation wont be final until the vote is decided. Abraham Lincoln will still speak in the new version, but George Washington will be added as an additional speaking role. Reported return date for the attraction is July 4th, 2009.

TouringPlans.com subscription price increase on January 1, 2009

by on December 17, 2008

The price of a one-year subscription to TouringPlans.com will increase by $1 to $8.95 on January 1, 2009. That works out to around $0.75 per month. Access to the site will still be free for owners of the current edition of the Unofficial Guide.

The last price increase was in 2006. Since that time we’ve added the ability to create your own touring plans, provided thousands of high-resolution photos and digital videos of the Disney resorts, and made significant improvements to the crowd calendar predictions.

In 2009, we’ll be adding travel blogs so you can keep up with the research team’s activities. Our hotel coverage will expand to include more of the book’s contents, plus additional material. Our photo tours will include the theme parks, attractions and water parks. And we’ll be supporting touring plans for destinations besides Walt Disney World.

Thanks very much for supporting the site, your comments and suggestions. It’s been a great 2008, and we look forward to an even better 2009.
