The Walt Disney World reservation system will go down for scheduled maintenance on Thursday, February 23, 2012, at 5 a.m. EST. The system is anticipated to come back online “sometime later in the same day.” During the downtime reservations will not be accessible on the web or by phone. During past such events, downtime of the system has often been substantially longer than originally announced by Disney.
Disney anticipates an inability to make same-day dining reservations on February 23 and is recommending that guests complete necessary transactions by 10 p.m. on Wednesday, February 22. Guests scheduled to attend February 23 dinner shows (Hoop-Dee-Doo Musical Revue and Spirit of Aloha) have been advised to obtain their physical tickets on Wednesday night.
As a matter of fair warning, previous system upgrades have sometimes resulted in unexpected outages in usage of Disney Dining Plan credits and room keys as charge cards. Be prepared to offer alternate payment in the park if needed. During a past downtime it was reported that some restaurants insisted on payment in full while the dining credit system was down. If this happens it’s better to keep your receipt and hash it out with the resort front desk for a reimbursement when the system comes back online rather than argue with a particular restaurant. Hopefully it won’t come to that this time around, but it’s better to be prepared than to have your vacation marred by an unexpected confrontation with a server demanding a “valid” form of payment.
Do note that any room charge, dining plan, etc. issues need to be resolved in-person before you leave the resort. There is little that can be done once you’re off the property and back home. Also, printed versions of confirmations for reservations, dining times, etc. are more likely to be honored than a verbal claim if there is any dispute over the matter.
Finally, the system downtime makes no mention of the park ticket system, but it’s likely best to avoid any critical transactions on the morning of the February 23. We advise that you to print out any ticket vouchers or confirmations by the evening prior– just in case.
