Are you a runDisney fan? Does running 48.6 miles in four days time sound like fun to you?

Well, then you are in luck! Today, Disney announced a brand new race that has been added to the 2014 Marathon Weekend.

A 10k has been added to the roster for the 2014 docket, and since this is a runDisney event, of course the medal has to be spectacular. The 10k medal will feature Mickey’s favorite gal pal…Minnie!

Countless runners have officially completed the Goofy Challenge (running both the half and the full marathons). Previously, the Dopey had always been something that was made up by Disney fanatics who had run not only the Goofy (completing the half marathon and the full marathon) but also finishing the 5k offered that weekend, too. With the addition of this 10k, the Dopey Challenge is now officially a thing!

Dopey Challenge runners who complete all four races willearn the Dopey medal.  (For those keeping score, if you run all four races, you will get SIX medals! Not a bad haul for one weekend!)

The 2014 Marathon Weekend is scheduled for January 8 – 12, 2014. For those who are looking to register for any of the Marathon Weekend festivities, you may do so starting April 9, 2013, at noon EDT at rundisney.com. If you are interested in participating, make sure to sign up early.

  • We are going down the 11th – 18th and never during a marathon, cand anyone give a hint as to a work around or what it is like crowd wise etc? Thanks

  • I delight in, result in I found exactly what I used to be looking for. You’ve ended my four day lengthy hunt! God Bless you man. Have a great day. Bye

  • Sounds great, gonna find a buyer for one of my kidney’s to pay for it.

    • I was thinking the same thing!!! $500 to do Dopey challenge….plus another $200 if you want the runner’s retreat! And that was the “early bird” pricing. that’s more than $10 per mile!!

      • I think this is a shrewd move by Disney. They’ll get plenty of people to pay $500 (plus whatever the active.com fees are). The races are already extremely expensive (my local ones are about 1/3 the price and contribute some portion of the fee to charity), and this year’s had more participants than ever. Plus the 2013 Disneyland Dumbo Double Dare sold in a matter of hours. There’s clearly a fair amount demand and price insensitivity right now regarding Disney races.

There’s also the advantage of forcing people into longer trips. To the extent that participants stay/eat on-property or purchase park tickets, that benefits Disney. I think a decent number of folks (and there are thousands of them each year) willing to do the Goofy Challenge will be willing to do the Dopey Challenge–it’s not much harder. And that probably means adding another two days to their trips. At that point, why not stay the week and bring the whole family? Ka-ching!

I often marvel at how good Disney is at at sucking money out of visitors’ wallets (mine included!). That said, although I’m tempted, I won’t likely be Dopey in 2014.
