Daisy’s Best Week Ever October 13, 2016: Disneyland and Tokyo Disneyland!

Hello, lovebugs! I hope you’ve had an amazing last few weeks! This week we’re visiting Disneyland and then going all the way to Tokyo Disneyland. I hope you’re ready for a trip around the (Disney) world! 

If I had to pick a favorite Disney movie then it would either be The Hunchback of Notre Dame or The Nightmare Before Christmas. (What’s your favorite? I’d love to hear in the comments!) Because of my wacky taste in films, the Haunted Mansion Holiday at Disneyland holds a special place in my heart. Back in May I started to make my plans to go see the attraction overlay. If you aren’t familiar, this is when Jack and all his friends take over The Haunted Mansion, and he’s looking great this year!

Just added this year is Sally looking on in adoration at her Pumpkin King! She’s always been one of my favorite characters so I was over the moon to see her added. The photos just don’t do it justice, but Guy added a great video here if you’d like take a spin on the attraction.

The gingerbread house this year was even themed in Sally’s honor. Those panels are supposed to look like the panels on her dress with a creepy arm stretched out stitching it all together. It’s so cool that they update the house every year! 😀

What would a Disneyland blog be without a little food? When we visited Cafe Orleans I had planned on getting pumpkin beignets, but was surprised to learn their special Halloween offering this year was butterscotch! I don’t know about you, but butterscotch doesn’t scream Halloween in my book. We decided to go with classic Mickey beignets and had no regrets. Have you tried these? They’re fantastic!

Over at The Grand Californian we found this beautiful, handmade display. Can you believe it’s made from 85 pounds of rice krispy cereal, 48 pounds of marshmallow, 34 pounds of butter, 55 pounds of chocolate, 180 pounds of fondant, 300 pounds of powdered sugar, and 54 pounds of egg whites? It looked good enough to eat. 😀

At Trader Sam’s Enchanted Tiki Bar, I didn’t find any of the Halloween souvenir mugs but I found this handsome cat. He was so friendly and let us pet him. I had the serious thought that if I was local I would have been tempted to take this guy home with me. I wonder if Disneyland loses cats to locals that way? I can’t think of a better souvenir to bring home! What do you think? Would you kidnap a Disneyland kitty?

Before I get in trouble for stealing cats, maybe we should hop over to Tokyo where I was lucky enough to visit over the past few weeks. Below is a photo of the entrance plaza at Tokyo DisneySea and decorations for the 15th anniversary of the park. Yep, that big boat is just there for this celebration. You can even buy a special wand that makes this boat change colors and come to life after you’ve touched it on differed statues around the parks. It sure puts our commemorative cupcakes at the US parks into perspective!

Below is just one of the seasonal mugs they were selling to celebrate Halloween. I always think the desserts are a little strange at the Tokyo parks. They tend to have a flan like texture and not be quite sweet enough. However, at less than $9 for dessert and a mug you get to keep, I’m a sucker for these! They even give you bubble wrap when you by one. They think of everything!

Take a gander at this classic view of Mount Prometheus. Isn’t she a beauty? It’s easy to forget you’re in a theme park at Tokyo DisneySea. That volcano actually erupts several times throughout the day adding even further to the atmosphere. Inside is the Journey to the Center of the Earth ride. It was actually closed while we were visiting, which was a relief because it has a gut wrenching drop at the end! It certainly isn’t for ride chickens like me.

Now this is more my speed! The indoor Mermaid Lagoon area houses several smaller rides, a play area, a shop, a restaurant, and a live action show. Since it was a little warm during our visit we spent a lot of time in here. This view is just as you enter the building and look down into the land.

And here’s what it looks like when you’re down on the floor walking through the building. Look at those high ceilings! Wow- this area is impressive, but much like a Las Vegas casino, I lose track of all time and space in here. I missed more than one fastpass return window playing around in Mermaid Lagoon.

Over in Arabian Coast the landscapes change again and you’ll find Aladdin themed attractions. However, Mount Prometheus is visible from nearly anywhere in the park. Much like Cinderella’s castle it’s an anchoring landmark that helps you find your way. That is something I appreciate very much when I’m jet lagged and in a park that I’ve only visited a handful of times. 😉

This area is so picturesque! Below is just a small part of the open courtyard. In the background you can see The Magic Lamp Theater and the (very) long queue outside. We had out longest lines ever this trip to Tokyo Disney Resort. We didn’t mind though, it’s a fun park to just stroll and take in the atmosphere.

Since we weren’t doing too many attractions, we decided to try scoring a dining reservation at a very special restaurant. Magellan’s is tucked into a fortress at the base of Mount Prometheus. It’s delicious food and excellent service are legendary. We’re normally not ones for fancy meals, but we wanted to see what all the fuss was about.

When we first stepped into the Magellan’s dining room I was so impressed! It’s very large and has a grand, painted ceiling. I’d seen pictures, but I was still gobsmacked walking through. I don’t think I’ve ever seen anything quite like it! The globe pictured below is a tremendous centerpiece in the main dining room.

So you can imagine I was a little disappointed when we were smuggled through a bookcase into a dark room. This room is called the wine cellar (pictured below left) and I learned it was quite the honor to dine inside. My local friend told me she didn’t know anyone that had eaten in the room. Ironically, we didn’t even ask to be seated there. Regardless, we settled in to enjoy! (Remember you can click on any photo to see it larger)

I couldn’t possibly show all of the food we ate, but below is my four course meal. Below left are the scallops that I started with. They were perfectly cooked and SO tasty! Below right is my salad, and it was… salad. For me it’s tough to make salad special, but I don’t remember it being bad.

For my entree I tried the fish. They had several beef dishes on the menu that looked amazing, but I’ve learned over the years that seafood is a better bet when in Japan. My fish was well cooked and lightly seasoned, but nothing really special. Overall, I wasn’t blown away with the food or service at Magellan’s. We spent long stretches of time just sitting and waiting. We felt forgotten and spent the better part of our evening here. We ended the day with creme brulee (which was fantastic) and waiting for the check. I’m glad we tried it, but I’m not sure I’ll be running back during our next trip.

The next day, we hopped a monorail to Disneyland! In Tokyo all the parks and their Downtown Disney area are connected by the monorail. Below you can see they’ve dressed up every little detail for the holidays. These are almost too cute to hang on to while you ride to the next station!

Here’s the obligatory photo of entrance to Tokyo Disneyland. Unlike other Disney parks they do not have a Main Street, but rather a large grouping of shops and restaurants connected under one roof. This area is called the World Bazaar. While I imagine this makes visiting the parks more pleasant during rain or snow, it’s still strange to see a park with no Main Street! Not to mention parades do not pass through this area.

Of course, the first order of business was finding some breakfast. We decided on Mike’s melon bread and custard bread with a cute Mickey on it. I didn’t love the custard bread, but where has Mike’s melon bread been all my life!?? The bread inside was light and airy, almost like a donut. The outside is a bit chewy and it’s all amazing! We stopped by many more times to pickup this bread throughout the trip and regretted waiting until our third trip to give it a try.

I’ve always said visiting other parks around the world just feels like a bizarro version of your own park. This photo proves it! How weird is it to be able to see Cinderella’s castle from Frontierland? Also, Pecos Bills is a walk up window in Tokyo without an expansive dining room.

Tokyo Disneyland also might the only place you can buy Danny the Lamb merchandise. Who knows what this cute, little guy is from? Let everyone know in the comments below! 😀

Here’s another treat that I hadn’t tried before this trip to Tokyo Disney, the meat and nut pastry. The name says it all, as one side is filled with meat and the other filled with nuts. It comes in an adorable Chip and Dale food wrapper and is shaped like a peanut. I love, love, loved the nut side! I didn’t really care for the meat, but I’m glad I tried it and would get it again!

Walking back to the front of the park, I stopped into a gift shop in Tomorrowland. Inside I spotted this cool display. There are so many little details like this in ever Disney park, but especially in Tokyo Disney. I love sharing them all with you. What’s your favorite little detail in a Disney park?

What better place to end the week than with another snack? In Tokyo Disneyland they take their waffles very seriously! Below is the Halloween seasonal offering. It include fried apples and caramel ice cream as toppings. I wouldn’t mind if the US parks started serving these! I miss them already.

  • Hi Lauren, I really enjoyed your article, thank you! I too would be tempted to “adopt” a Disneyland kitty, but I think the problem comes with trying to get one out of the park. Given my experience of getting cats into cat carriers, I think it would be very difficult to coax one into a backpack or other bag and get him out of the park without a frantic scratching incident. I would imagine that there are a few cast members out there with former Disneyland cats, though!

    • Hi Jillian! This black cat that I encountered at Trader Sam’s was totally chill. I think I could have scooped him up and carried him out under my arm. Can you tell I fell in love with him a little? But I agree – putting my two cats in carriers is a nightmare. They certainly don’t like being contained. I actually got photos of a TOKYO Disneyland cat too this trip.. but I didn’t include them because I didn’t want to look like too much of a crazy cat lady. 😉 Thanks for reading and commenting!

    • Hi Mraco – I also wonder how they keep it from stinking after sitting out for weeks. They do it here at WDW too (Especially at Christmas). I report on the displays because they are seasonal so not everyone get to see them. But I agree, it seems wasteful and a little gross! I guess they are also showcasing the skills of their culinary teams. Thanks for reading and leaving a comment. 😀

    • I thought it was just me, LOL. I don’t know if they really are or if it just seems that way because I’m a visitor at the other parks. I’ve given myself homework to really go enjoy WDW for my next BWE. Let’s see how I do. 😉
