Ask It: Can You Take the Heat?

There was a brief moment during this week’s solar eclipse when the sun was largely hidden and the lack of sunlight beating down from the Florida sky felt really, really good. That said, I’m rather glad that the sun came back. It would be tough being in the Sunshine State without, you know, sun.

This morning, we had an interesting article on the blog about just how hot it can get at Walt Disney World in the summer. If you haven’t had a chance to read it, I’ll wait–it’s worth your time.

All back? Awesome. This week’s question is about Florida heat. Specifically, we’re asking:

Have your experiences with (or fear of) Florida summer temperatures caused you to avoid summer trips to Walt Disney World?

  • Yes (59%, 354 Votes)
  • No (41%, 249 Votes)

Total Voters: 603

The poll is live now here and on Twitter. We’ll have your answers next week. In the meantime, feel free to share your horror stories about Florida heat or tips for how you stay cool on those summertime trips.

  • I don’t mind going in the hot summer months, but I definitely take a couple things into consideration.
    1. I WILL be sweating, and any chance of looking pretty or having cute hair go out the windo
    2. Multiple showers a day will probably need to happen
    3. Either pack enough clothes for changing in the afternoon/after a swim, etc.
    OR
    4. Stay in a DVC villa so you can wash/dry your clothes and stay fresh.

  • In fact, many times we choose to go in August because of the free dining deals. (We have 5 kids plus 2 adults so free dining is KEY.) Having said that, there is not much difference between June-July-August for the Orlando heat.

  • No fear of the heat — it’s fear of the crowds that’s kept me away in the summer. We enjoy alternating trips every couple years with a “warm” (September or May) and a “cool” (November or January) trip.

  • I hate the heat, but we still go in the summer due to school schedules. We just make it a point to head back to the room or the pool in the afternoon.

  • I’m definitely pretty heat sensitive, so this has factored in for me quite a bit.
Honestly, the tipping factor was one ill timed July vacation a few years ago. People were passing out/becoming ill, and getting carried out on stretchers, which definitely kinda had an impact on the ‘magic’ so to speak. Just my reasoning.

  • I went to Disney in July 10 years ago and it was nuts and I never wanted to go back. This year I decided to take a quick weekend trip in August and I didn’t hate it. 10 years of touring experience helped me treat the trip differently and it wasn’t awful. I went to rope drop and late night, but spent the afternoon relaxing in the hotel. Made the morning and evening better and I was more relaxed. I wouldn’t go out of my way to travel in the dead of summer again, but I wouldn’t say no if someone suggested it.

  • We travel from the UK. Our children have left school now but before they did we had to go to WDW in school holidays. The only time our girls got 2 weeks or more off school is Christmas Easter and August. From that choice August is the least busy so we mostly went then. Now we don’t have to go in school holidays we have tried different times of the year. We love going in October and early December. Haven’t tried January February or March yet – but we will ……c

  • No, but fear of crowds will keep me from ever going during peak season!

  • I’m a solo traveller, so haven’t got any kids to think of, but it’s the crowds not the sun that puts me off summer travel! Usually I go in September, but this year I’m going November/December time as I’m a Christmas lover and want to see the decorations.

  • One of our favorite times to go is the first week of September. All the kids are back in school and the parks are very manageable. You just have to know what to expect.

We always make rope drop and then plan to head out around noon time. We then head back to the resort for some pool time and then to the room to relax and cool down. We then shower, changes clothes and head back to the park mid to late afternoon.

  • I would be willing to go in the summer (although I haven’t actually done so yet) but we always go back to the hotel from noon to early evening for lunch, swim, nap, shower and dinner meaning we avoid the hot hot hot hot part of the day.

  • No way. I have MS and I have a one year old. We go during Jan/Feb because that’s best for us. Work circumstances sent us during the end of April into May this year and it was awful – and I say that as someone from Birmingham who is used to the heat and humidity!

As a child my folks took us during July once, and we all swore we’d never do that again. This was pre-fastpass. I can see if you can take the weather, that it would probably be workable with a touring plan.

  • Not only do we go in the summer – we go over the 4th of July! We don’t mind the heat, but the daily rain can be a real bummer. Stay hydrated, wear moisture wicking clothes and whatever you do – don’t stand and watch the castle show in the heat of the mid day sun!

  • I leave in 6 days. I have only ever been in the fall and winter. I’m starting to get scared.

  • While I’ve never been to Disney world in the summer because of fear of heat (it can get into the 80’s in the winter!), I have been to Disneyland in the summer. For some reason, the temperature was way more reasonable. We only felt uncomfortably hot in the early afternoon and not in the shade.
