Sooooo, you’re heading to Disneyland Resort for Labor Day and beyond — or you’re considering it — and you’re wondering what you’re in for. Well, you’ve come to the right place! Let’s get to this week’s Disneyland preview!

Special Events and Notes

This week kicks off with a holiday weekend — Labor Day — and things start with a bang (or starting pistol, if you prefer), as the Disneyland Half Marathon Weekend is already in full swing! There are races both Saturday and Sunday morning, and the runner’s expo continues throughout the weekend at the Disneyland Hotel.

With the holiday and the races, you can expect larger crowds than typical for this time of year. They aren’t oppressive, but it will be significantly different on the weekend than the rest of the week from a crowd standpoint. You can get more detail on the crowds below.

Also, we’ve been telling you about the Summer of Heroes at Disney’s California Adventure for quite some time now and it’s still going on, but it is nearing the end of its run, with just a couple of weeks remaining. If you want to experience it, start making plans now. Check out Derek Burgan’s write-up on the event if you’ve not been before to get the most out of it.

Crowds

This week presents a sharp dichotomy — average to large crowds for Labor Day weekend, followed by very small crowds for the remainder of the week. Obviously, if you’re taking advantage of the long weekend or here for the races, your dates kinda are what they are, but if you DO have flexibility in when you go, the latter part of the week will have much lighter crowds.  Also, note that the races on Saturday and Sunday will ensure that there are tons of bodies at the resort as a whole in the mornings in the form of racers and spectators, so build in some extra time to get into the area and around.

Full details, including park-by-park crowd levels, are available on our Crowd Calendar.

Weather

If you’re currently in Southern California, you are aware that it is extraordinarily hot at the moment.  Indeed, the folks at runDisney issued a heat advisory for the races this weekend on account of the heat. There is some good news on the horizon, however — you can expect to see a drop starting Sunday from this surface-of-the-sun heat to a level of heat that is just objectively uncomfortable. In comparison, though, the upper 80s and low 90s you’ll experience will feel balmy. Also, with the exception of Sunday, where there are some isolated thunderstorms in the forecast, there’s no significant rain to worry about for the rest of the week.

As always, it’s wise to double check the weather as the day of your visit approaches. Check out the most up-to-date forecast here.

Shows

Disneyland Resort has a full slate of shows on the busy days, and a very lean schedule on the other days. World of Color and Mickey’s Soundsational Parade  will happen twice on Saturday, Sunday, and Monday; on Friday, the parade will run twice, but World of Color will only run once.  Fantasmic! will only run on Saturday, Sunday, Monday, and Friday, but will run twice a night on those evenings at Disneyland Park. Similarly, the Remember…Dreams Come True Fireworks Spectacular will only run on Saturday, Sunday, Monday, and Friday, and will run once on those days.  At Disney’s California Adventure, the Pixar Play Parade is currently dark and will not run at all. Detailed show schedules, including smaller-scale performances like the daily Flag Retreat Ceremony, can be found here.

Admission and Hours

Deluxe, Southern California, and Southern California Annual Passport Holders are blocked out on Saturday and Sunday, but honored the remainder of the week. All other Annual Passports will be honored all days of the week. For those of you buying tickets as day guests, single-day tickets are at Peak cost ($124/$118) Saturday-Monday, Regular cost ($110 adult/$104 child) on Friday, and Value ($97/$91) the remainder of the week.

Regular park hours (excluding Extra Magic Hours/Magic Mornings) are as follows this week:

Resort guests can take advantage of these hours every day of their stay for Extra Magic Hours, while guests eligible for Magic Mornings can use that benefit one day at Disneyland Park only. Refurbishments

At California Adventure, Soarin’ Around the World and Monsters, Inc. Mike & Sulley to the Rescue! are undergoing brief refurbishments starting on September 5. Soarin’ will return shortly thereafter on September 7, and Monsters will return on September 23. Additionally, River Belle Terrace will be closing on September 5, although no re-open date has been announced as of yet. Goofy’s Sky School is also currently closed.

At Disneyland Park, Space Mountain and Haunted Mansion remain closed until September 15 as they get fitted with their holiday attire, and Little Red Wagon Corn Dogs will be down throughout the week.

Looking ahead, Finding Nemo Submarine Voyage will be closing at Disneyland Park on September 18 and returning September 23, and Buzz Lightyear Astro Blasters will be closing indefinitely on September 25. Keep those dates in mind if those attractions are an important part of your trip!
