The 12 Days of a Theme Park Christmas

by on December 24, 2015

Everyone has their favorite Christmas traditions. For some it’s a dramatic reading of ‘Twas the Night Before Christmas, while for others it is the 24 hour marathon of A Christmas Story. Many of us enjoy reading the famous poem 12 Days of Christmas, even going so far as to figuring out how much all those items would cost (imagine if they were bought at a theme park!) This year we are starting a new tradition on the blog with a look at the 12 Days of a Theme Park Christmas. Get close to your loved ones, slip on an ugly sweater, drink a big sip of egg nog, and let’s begin with…

TWELVE CLOSED ATTRACTIONS

This is a busy time for the Disney Dump as many attractions have been added to the pile. A great time to invest in construction walls though!

ELEVEN BANISHED BUBBLE GUNS

SATURDAY SIX: Second Annual Theme Park Turkeys of the Year

by on November 28, 2015

This week’s SATURDAY SIX is one of our favorites as we present the Second Annual “Turkeys” of the Year. For Thanksgiving this week we took a look back at things both Disney and Universal fans should be thankful for, but today we are going to go the other way. Gather round as we continue the tradition of awarding six Theme Park “Turkeys” to the craziest, most outrageous, or just downright weird stories of the year, concluding with the coveted Golden Turkey award. Let’s kick off the ceremony with a Disney snack no one saw coming….

# 6 – Animal Kingdom Poop Snacks

This June at Zuri’s Sweet Shop in Disney’s Animal Kingdom four new snacks debuted that were made to resemble animal droppings. That’s right, poop. The Match The Species snacks featured food designed to look like Elephant, Hippo, Giraffe, and Cotton Top Tamarin poop. You have to give credit where credit is due, that’s a unique presentation.

The snacks became an instant sensation on Disney social media, and quickly made the rounds to mainstream media. The poop snacks were pulled from the shelves in less than two weeks. Disney officially said that they were just a test and were not coming back, but several sources claim that the reason they disappeared so fast was because of the numerous complaints by guests who didn’t find the snacks amusing.

How I learned to stop worrying and love Pandora-The World of Avatar

by on September 8, 2015

The Na’vi just can’t win.

First, the initial announcement that James Cameron’s blockbuster Avatar would be coming to Disney’s Animal Kingdom was met with jeers from those who questioned the introduction of fantasy in a park dedicated to realism, along with those who groused about the tree hugging politics of the film and others who just didn’t think the intellectual property was a fit with Disney’s family friendly fare.

Then at the D23 Expo, the big reveal for Pandora-The World of Avatar was overshadowed by the hoopla surrounding the announcement of Star Wars-themed lands at Disneyland and Walt Disney World.

Overlook the 2017 opening of Animal Kingdom’s newest land if you will. I’m here to tell you why you should be excited enough to plan a trip around the debut of Pandora and why it won’t be the dud that some Disney fans suspect.

D23 Expo 2015 has come to an end, and for some people mercifully so. There was a lot of exhausted looking attendees seen around the Anaheim Convention Center today. I used today to take a look at some booths that I missed, and to see some favorites one last time. Here you see “Harold” the original abominable snowman from Disneyland‘s Matterhorn. It’s great to see that he’s doing well in retirement.

DSC06600With the big announcements at the Walt Disney Studios, and Walt Disney Parks and Resorts taken care of yesterday, Disney Interactive was given its chance to shine. Kingdom Hearts 3 received huge cheers from the crowd and it’s obvious this game is the game will be a huge hit. Baymax joined series executive producer Shinji Hashimoto to announce that a Big Hero 6 world will be included in the game.

Seen at D23 Expo 2015: Pandora: The World of Avatar

by on August 16, 2015

DSC06485We finally have a better idea of what Animal Kingdom’s Avatar land will look like, thanks to the Avatar section of the Walt Disney Parks and Resort booth at D23 Expo 2015. A name was even officially announced: “Pandora: The World of Avatar.”

DSC06486There only one thing Disney theme park nerds like more than riding new multi-million dollar attractions, and that one thing is looking at insanely detailed models of them. The model on display inside the Avatar booth was massive, at least 6 feet wide and looked extremely impressive.

The Sights of D23 Expo 2015 – Day 2

by on August 16, 2015

DSC06587D23 Expo 2015 day 2 has wrapped up and with it came a boatload of Disney theme park news and announcements. Bob Chapek took the stage for his first D23 Expo as Chairman of Walt Disney Parks and Resorts and shed some light on various projects. Announcements included lands based on Star Wars, Toy Story, and Avatar, as well as new attractions like Soarin’ Around the World.

IMG_6810One of the most surprising announcements was that Disneyland’s Space Mountain will be getting a Star Wars-themed overlay later this year as part of an event called “Star Wars: Season of the Force.”

It looks like the rumors were indeed true! It was announced at the D23 Expo today that Soarin’ Around the World will be headed to not only Epcot, but also to Disney California Adventure.

The attraction will take guests on a journey to far-flung lands and fly above some of the world’s most unique natural landscapes and man-made wonders. Some of the destinations will include the Great Wall of China and Monument Valley.

Disney California Adventure’s Soarin’, which debuted when the park opened in 2001, just saw an upgrade to digital projectors during the transformation of its land from Condor Flats to Grizzly Peak Airfield. In addition, over at Epcot, a third theater is currently being constructed, augmenting the two that have been there since the attraction opened in May 2005. Both upgrades are being done to prepare for the new film.

Soarin’ Around the World is expected to debut in 2016 in both parks.
