The Disney Magic, Disney’s first cruise ship, is going to see a little pixie dust with the re-imagining of quite a few areas, along with quite a few new exciting additions.

Disney

Atrium Lobby

The first thing guests will notice is a change in the atrium lobby. It will be redesigned to elegant art deco with elements of the sea. It will feature a new coral, blue, and aquamarine carpet with seashell inspiration. The chandelier will be inspired by the rays of the sun and the glisten of the surface of the ocean. A grand piano, beautiful furnishings and giant portholes will finish the look.

Kids Areas

Another area where changes will be afoot are the kids ares, the Oceaneer Club, which is open to 3 – 12 year olds. For the first time ever, Marvel will make its presence known in Marvel’s Avenger Academy. Here young crime fighters will be transported to a high tech command post used for special missions and operations training.

Disney

In addition, guests will find another new area, the Mickey Mouse Club, where kids will be able to create crafts and play games on mouse ear shaped tables. It will also feature an activity with magnetic, spinning gears called Goofy Gears. (Gawsh!)

In the Oceaneer Lab, a brand new pirate themed area will encourage kids to create, play, and explore.

For the littlest ones, geared for ages three months to 3 years old, the Small World Nursery, which is inspired by the attraction and will be filled with whimsy and discovery perfect for that age group.

Outside Play Areas

The upper deck of the ship is seeing some fun changes, as well. The first piece of excitement will revolve around the AquaDunk. This three story body slide begins with a surprise launch where rides step inside the tube and await a near-vertical launch from the floor beneath them. This will be for guests 48 inches or taller.

Also new will be the AquaLab, an interactive water playground where families (ages 3 and up) and play among geysers, bubblers, and pop jets. In addition, guests will find the Twist n’ Sprout water slide, which is for guests between 38 and 64 inches tall.

Finally, guests who are too little to get in on the action in these areas will be able to play in the Nephews’ Splash Zone. This area for children three and under stars Donald’s three nephews and will be plenty of fun for the smallest of cruisers.

Disney

Disney

Dining

Who doesn’t love dining on a Disney Cruise ship? It’s one of the most fun things! A new experience will take place at Animator’s Palate with the Drawn to Magic experience. Guests will see a few new characters in this fun show before their eyes, including Rapunzel from Tangled and Remy from Ratatouille.

A new restaurant transition will turn Parrot Cay into Carioca’s, which is named after Jose Carioca from The Three Caballeros. During the daylight hours, this area will have a festival theme, but when night falls, the atmosphere changes to Rio de Janiero with city side windows and lanterns flickering overhead.

Also coming to the ship will be Cabanas. This casual dining experience will have food and drink stations in the day and be table service at night. Finding Nemo is the inspiration behind this restaurant’s decor. This will replace Topsider Buffet and will see an expansion of space as well.

Nighttime District

A brand new area called After Hours will replace Beat Street and will include a new line up of clubs. Fathoms will be an undersea themed night club that will utilize special effects, lighting and sound to create different atmospheres For a low key time, Keys Piano Bar and Lounge will be added. Finally, O’Gills, an Irish pub and sports bar will be perfect for sports lovers.

Senses Spa

This area will be sleekly redesigned and will increase in size. The spa will be adding a few new features; teeth whitening, a new barbershop for men, and the Chill Spa for teens ages 13 – 17.

Family Fun

D Lounge will offer family friendly games, shows, dances and more designed with the whole family in mind. This area will replace Studio Sea.

Staterooms

The staterooms are always difficult because where do you put all the luggage you brought with you? Now, Disney has taken something from the Dream and the Fantasy and included it on this ship. Bed frames will be elevated for storage space underneath.

Lots of big changes are in store for the Magic during its drydocking from September 7 – October 10. We can’t wait to “sea” what’s in store!

The first couple of months after making New Year’s resolutions involving “eating better” or “losing weight” may not be the best time to talk about food, but what the hay. Let’s do it! This time I decided to name my 10 favorite Disney restaurants no matter the location! Well okay, not any. I haven’t been to the Disney parks overseas, so I can’t fairly include them. So this list will include Disneyland (of course), Walt Disney World, and the Disney Cruise Line ships.

Let me confess right away about three I’m leaving off that should probably be included. Club 33, Remy, and Victoria and Albert’s. Club 33 isn’t an option for most people as it’s not open to the general public. I haven’t dined at Remy or Victoria and Albert’s yet, so I’ll leave those off, too, even though I know by all accounts they’re amazing. If you have eaten at either, I’d love to hear where you would rank them! But for now we’ll just acknowledge their greatness and move on.

Now for the usual disclaimer. These are my opinions!! They do not necessarily reflect that of anyone else on this blog or anyone else on the planet, for that matter. I certainly cannot fit every good restaurant at Disney in this list. As you will see, I’ve included fine dining restaurants, more casual options, and even a character meal (or two). But I do have reasons for my 10 picks, and I think you will agree with some of them. And for the ones you don’t agree with or feel I unjustly left off? Well, that’s what the comments are for.

1. Palo – Palo is my favorite Disney restaurant anywhere. And it only costs $20!!! Oops, that’s not really true because you have to pay for the cruise first, but it’s only $20 more! And it’s an amazing experience. The location, the views, and oh my – the food. Palo is an adult only restaurant on all four Disney ships with panoramic views of the ocean, Caribbean islands, Alaska, or whatever else you happen to be sailing by while dining. It can be booked for dinner or brunch (although brunch is only available on sea days), and I can’t decide which I like better. Dinner is a multi-course experience with a top notch server at your beck and call whose goal is to fulfill all your dining dreams. Can’t decide what to order? No need to. Odds are your server’s going to bring you multiple things to try. You won’t be disappointed. Brunch, on the other hand, starts with a gorgeous spread of pastries, breads, cheeses, fruit, berries and desserts. Of course you could just stop there and be happy, but you don’t have to! The Chef also has a wonderful selection of entrees to choose from. I’ve eaten at Palo over and over and never once felt like it was anything short of the perfect dining experience.

2. Napa Rose – Napa Rose in the Grand Californian Hotel & Spa at Disneyland is expensive and worth every penny. My favorite way to eat there is at the Chef’s Counter, but the food is delicious no matter where you are sitting. I devoted an entire blog post to why Napa Rose and its Chef’s Counter is so amazing, so I won’t belabor the point here. It’s wonderful. Try it.

3. Citricos – Citricos in the Disney’s Grand Floridian Resort gets overlooked, sometimes being in the shadow of the more well-known Narcoossee’s, but it really shouldn’t. The menu includes an Oak Grilled Filet of Beef that is to die for. And the risotto? Wow. There’s also a wonderful Chef’s Domain, which is a private room that seats up to twelve. The Chef personally creates your delicious menu. If you want to feel pampered and maybe even like you are king of the world for an evening, this is where you want to eat.

4. Steakhouse 55 – Steakhouse 55 in the Disneyland Hotel became one of my favorites last fall. The main dining room is so elegant and yet not imposing at the same time. There’s a distinct Old Hollywood feel to it, which greatly appeals to me. The entrees are wonderful, and there is a 24-layer chocolate cake that awaits you at the end of the meal. That’s right, 24 layers. That is all.

5. Carthay Circle Restaurant – Carthay Circle at Disney California Adventure is the newest restaurant on this list, but it certainly deserves to be here! Carthay Circle is a gorgeous restaurant with wonderful service and food. The restaurant is modeled after the original Carthay Circle in Hollywood where Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs premiered in 1937. It’s a stunning replica, and the inside is just perfect. The house biscuits are a fascinating blend of bread, cheese, and jalapeno peppers, and there are too many good entree options to list. It’s well worth a visit when you are on the West Coast.

6. California Grill – The California Grill in the Contemporary Resort has location, location, location going for it! The view of Magic Kingdom’s fireworks is excellent! Schedule your dinner for a time that coincides with the fireworks and either watch from your table or step outside on the viewing balcony. The location is all I am sure about with the California Grill, because it is currently undergoing an extensive refurbishment and is closed for the next several months! At this time, the only thing we know that won’t change is the location! But I’m very confident that when it reopens the new menu will be as wonderful as the previous one, so I couldn’t leave it off the list.

7. ’Ohana – ‘Ohana in the Disney’s Polynesian Resort can be summed up in two words – unlimited meat. Meat and more meat. If you’re a vegetarian, that probably didn’t entice you to try it, so let me assure you there is more than meat. As someone who swore off vegetables at the wise age of 5, I can’t testify to its taste, but I am told the Vegetarian Platter is wonderful. But let’s face it, meat is the highlight here. Food is served family style with huge platters and portions. You start the meal with a salad, broccoli medley (Well, you start the meal with the broccoli medley; I don’t. No veggies, remember?), and lo mein noodles. Then your server will bring out a platter of fried dumplings and chicken wings. And that’s just a warm up for all the meat! Servers are roaming the restaurant with skewers of chicken, pork, shrimp and steak, just itching to put some on your plate. And just when you think you’re full, they come by again. With protests from no one, the meal ends with the insanely popular bread pudding served a la mode.

8. Le Cellier Steakhouse– Yes, I know, some people love Le Cellier in Epcot, and others feel it’s crazy overrated. I fall firmly in the camp of love. Let’s face it, there’s a reason it was so popular that it went to two credits on the Disney Dining Plan. The mushroom filet mignon will melt in your mouth. I could just eat the filet and be beyond happy. But it doesn’t start or stop there! The pretzel bread is so good! And the risotto that comes with the filet! And the chocolate desserts!! Oh my word, I am so hungry now.

9. Blue Bayou – Blue Bayou at Disneyland has some of the best theming of any restaurant at Disney. Its theme fits right in with the iconic Pirates of the Caribbean attraction. The boats float right by the tables and don’t feel out of place from the perspective of either the ride or the restaurant. You feel transported. The food’s not too shabby, either. The Monte Cristo, which is currently only served at lunch, is one of my favorites. The Jambalaya is delectable, and Filet Mignon with Blue Bayou Potatoes is tender and delicious.

10. Chef Mickey’s (or Cinderella’s Royal Table?) – I had a very hard time with this last one. I feel like character meals are a big part of the Disney experience for many guests and felt like I should include one. But which one was the question? Chef Mickey’s and Cinderella’s are pretty different as far as character meals go. If you have a princess lover in your family, go with a meal in THE icon at the Magic Kingdom – Cinderella Castle. The atmosphere is exactly what you would expect from a royal family. The food is good, and there are multiple princesses with time just for you. If your goal at Disney is to see the main mouse, then go directly to Chef Mickey’s in the Contemporary (after making reservations about 6 months in advance, of course). Mickey and all of the Fab Five are usually there for breakfast and dinner. Breakfast is fairly standard (but good) fare, and the highlight at dinner is the Parmesan Mashed Potatoes. Or maybe it’s the dessert buffet? Nope, still going with Parmesan Mashed Potatoes. In fact I think I have had them for dessert before.

I know restaurants preferences are highly subjective and picking favorites is like picking a favorite child at times, but I’d like to hear your favorites! What did I leave out? What do you strongly agree or disagree with?

Is there anyone who wouldn’t like to be surprised by a trip to Disney? Okay, I’m sure there are a few curmudgeons out there who don’t want to go to Disney (although I’m not sure why you’re reading this blog post), and I guess there are also some people who like to plan everything themselves and don’t want to be surprised. But, if you’re hoping to give someone a trip that does not fall into those categories, and are trying to think of a good way to do it, here are some ideas!

I have a couple of tips before we start. First, if you’re giving this trip to someone who’s a planner, or to someone for whom anticipation is half the fun, give it early. Don’t do a “day of” surprise! Give them some time to plan and get even more excited. There’s nothing to say a surprise can’t be 6 months before the trip! Second, if you tell anyone other than the person you are booking the trip through, you’re risking it no longer being a surprise. If you must tell someone else, MAKE SURE THEY KNOW IT’S A SURPRISE! My husband once ruined a surprise for an adorable little 6 year old who had no idea she was leaving for Disney the next day (although to be fair, hubby didn’t know it was a surprise either). Smooth, Honey.

1. Open a Present – If you search YouTube for “Disney Surprise,” you’ll see this is a very popular option. Give someone a present with something inside that represents your Disney trip. A friend of mine gave her sons a little model cruise ship for Christmas and they knew they were going on a cruise. Another one of my friends gave her kids Disney shirts and Mickey ears and they knew they were going to Disneyland. You can have a whole box of clues! Disney dollars, Disney apparel, Disney anything! Another option is a flat out card in their gift telling them they’re going! There are also lots of possibilities for timing here. Birthday, Christmas, anniversary, etc. You decide!

2. Scavenger Hunt – If you want to drag out the suspense a little more, have a scavenger hunt! The first thing the recipient opens could only be a clue! A clue to the next destination where they’ll find – another clue! And then – well you know how scavenger hunts work. The final clue leads to the final destination which will give away the surprise! Fun right?

3. Decoy Trip – Plan a decoy trip. That will explain the suitcases and maybe even get you some help with packing! Or, if you’re surprising adults, a decoy trip will explain the time they need off work! You could go all the way to the airport the day of the trip and keep up this ruse! Or even farther! What if they thought they were taking a Carnival cruise they’ve done a million times before, when instead the limo (yeah limo, I’m going big here) pulls up to a majestic Disney ship in the port? Just make sure of two things. First, don’t let the decoy trip be overly exciting. If they have wanted to go to the Grand Canyon all their lives, don’t tell them they’re going to the Grand Canyon. There are not too many trips that Disney would pale in comparison too, but a lifelong dream might be one of them. Second, don’t tell them you’re going somewhere cold if you’re going to Los Angeles in the summer. Pick a similar climate to your destination so they pack appropriately.

4. Scrapbook – Any scrapbookers out there? My favorite surprise I’ve pulled off involved a scrapbook. For Christmas one year, we were able to give my parents a Disney Cruise with all the kids and grandkids. My parents have been on many Disney trips with us but never a cruise at that point. I made a scrapbook for their Christmas present. The first page of the scrapbook was entitled “Our Magical Disney Trips”. We had done 5 trips together at that point but the scrapbook had 6 trip sections. Each section had an introductory page with the destination, the dates, and the list of attendees. The following three pages had pictures from each trip. Dad and Mom looked through the pages reliving each trip and oohing and ahhing appropriately. Then they turned the page and discovered the last section. The last section had the cruise, the date, and the list of attendees. The next 3 pages had blank spots for all the pictures to be filled in later. The build-up to that last section was so exciting! We were all dying for them to get to those last few pages and realize that the scrapbook wasn’t their only present! The last few pages were met with disbelief and crazy excitement. It was a homerun as far as surprises go.

5. Have Mickey Call – Now that I think about it, having Mickey tell you you’re going on vacation may actually be the best way to find out. How can you do that you ask? Well, let me tell you! If you book a Disney Cruise, you can sign up for a Mickey call right in your reservation! Just be careful, because I had a client not realize how quickly Mickey was going to call, and Mickey didn’t complete the surprise, he spoiled the surprise if you understand the distinction. Sometimes Disney includes character calls in their packages. It’s included right now for the Stay Play and Dine package at Disney World. Another option is Disney’s Enchanted Calls. The calls are only $2.49 each and you can pick your favorite character. The “Good Morning” theme has a “taking a trip” option. And if you’re a Disney Movie Rewards member, you can get one free call with the code ENCHANTEDCALLS. I must warn you, these calls are a little addictive.

6. Fake Date – Are you worried you’ll slip up and ruin the surprise? Then this idea is for you. Tell them you’re going! Just don’t tell them when. Tell them you’re going the next week, the next month, or even the next year! That way they can help in the planning, they can enjoy the anticipation, and they can participate in all of the pre-trip fun! But just when they least expect it – they’re on the way!

7. Mickey Shaped Meals – How about a Mickey-themed meal? Mickey waffles, Mickey pancakes, Mickey pizza, anything else you can think of that you can make into a Mickey shape! I know none of those go together in a traditional meal, but that may make it even more fun! Serve it up and see if anyone picks up on the clues. If no one figures it out during dinner, you can certainly tell them afterwards!

8. Make Your Own Disney Parks Video – Have you ever ordered a vacation planning DVD even when you had no trip planned just so you could watch it? People love those videos! Well, what if you edited your own video with a surprise ending? How exciting would it be to pop in that video and find out it’s not just any trip planning video and you’re actually going? In this day and age with all the video editing software out there, it shouldn’t be too hard! And if it is, ask the nearest teenager. Better yet, give them $20.

9. Disney Florist – How about a special delivery at work or home? A bouquet of flowers with Mickey in the middle? A basket of Disney themed gifts? Any delivery announcing your intention to take the recipient on vacation! If you can’t work out a Disney theme with one of your local florists, try somewhere like Disneyflorist.com for ideas!

10. Pick Them Up and Take Them – When no other surprise idea seems right, just pick them up and take them. Pick them up from school, pick them up from work, pick them up anywhere and go. Of course, you’ll have to either have packed for them or be prepared to purchase a lot of Mickey clothes upon arrival. But that may be part of the fun, too!

Now I know some of you have other ideas! Bring it! We want to hear them! It’s practically a public service announcement to share your plans with the rest of us!

This is the first in a series of articles we will be running on Disney Cruise Line. Please let us know what you think in the comments!

One of the factors that causes guests to shy away from a Disney Cruise Line vacation is its up front costs. When you book a Walt Disney World vacation, you have complete control over the number of nights you spend, which resort you choose, and how you want to eat. On DCL a lot of those decisions are made for you and included in your costs.

For fun, let’s do an apples to apples comparison of 2 similar land and sea-based trips:

Accommodations
At Walt Disney World, your choices are Value, Moderate, or Deluxe. On the Cruise Line, you have 11 (11!) categories of stateroom from which to choose. This can be a little intimidating so let’s try to simplify it a bit. You really have 4 major room types from which to choose:

Inside

Outside with porthole

Outside with verandah

Suite with concierge

To match these up to WDW room categories, the closest approximation would be:

Inside = Moderate

Porthole = Deluxe standard view

Verandah = Water view or Savannah view

Concierge = Club level

The beauty of the cruise line is that even inside stateroom (including the one I stayed in on Deck 2 of the Fantasy last spring) has twice daily housekeeping with turndown service and a dedicated stateroom host. You’re not going to get that at Port Orleans.

Dining
All meals and beverages, including room service, but not including alcohol or specialty drinks are part of the cruise fare. This is roughly equivalent to the Magic Your Way Plus Deluxe Dining Plan, only far more flexible. The table service restaurants on the ships for lunch and dinner are better than WDW table service restaurants, but not quite as good as a Signature dining experience such as Jiko or Yachtsman Steakhouse. The buffets on the ships (Cabanas on the Fantasy and Dream, Topsider Buffet on the Magic, Beach Blanket Buffet on the Wonder) are better than most Walt Disney World buffets except Boma.

Port Adventures
A cost you have on the Cruise Line that you do not have at Walt Disney World is Port Adventures. For the purposes of our article, we will compare it to park admission. Of course, Port Adventures are completely optional and there is a wide range of activities at many price points you can sign up for. Some of them are fantastic values, like the onboard beverage seminars and sting ray experience on Castaway Cay. Others, like the Dolphin interaction at Nassau’s Atlantis resort are pricy, but once in a life time experiences.

Now let’s hit the numbers. We will compare the costs of 4 night cruise from Port Canaveral to 4 nights at Walt Disney World for family of 4. Our family is 2 adults, one 14 year old, and one 7 year old. The 4 night cruise stops at Nassau and Castaway Cay. For Port Adventures, our family will experience the Aquaventure water park at Nassau’s Atlantis Resort and the Extreme Getaway Package on Castaway Cay, which includes all-day snorkel, float, and bike rentals, plus the one-hour sting ray experience. For the Walt Disney World vacation, we include the Deluxe meal plan and 5 day non-park hopper tickets.

I recently took my first cruise of any kind, aboard the Disney Cruise Line’s new ship Fantasy for its media preview trip. This series of blogs describes that cruise and how the overall experience compares to my expectations. As a disclaimer, Disney provided this cruise to the WDW Today Podcast for free, and I was the WDW Today representative on the cruise.

Getting to the Cruise Terminal

Because I was traveling the week prior to the cruise, I didn’t receive any formal paper documentation describing how to get to the ship or what to expect upon arrival; the only thing I had was a set of two emails saying that I should arrive between 1:00 PM and 1:30 PM, and another email confirming I’d paid the necessary taxes for the cruise.

Under normal circumstances you’d receive your confirmation documents a few weeks in advance, allowing you to do online check-in for the cruise, and perhaps set up dining reservations at Palo or Remy, the Fantasy’s two high-end restaurants. My concerns were more pedestrian: I needed to know how to get to Port Canaveral, find the ship, and get on board.

Fortunately, Disney’s website has very clear driving directions for getting to Port Canaveral. If you’re driving from Wait Disney World, the most direct route uses eastbound State Road 536 to the 417 (Greenway), to the Beachline Expressway (State Road 528). The 417 and 528 are toll roads, so have $10 in cash available for the round trip. (If you’ve got a GPS, enter “9155 Charles M. Rowland Drive, Port Canaveral, FL” as your destination.)

Disney's Terminal at Port Canaveral. Photo courtesy of Port Canaveral.

You’re on the Beachline Expressway for almost the entire distance to Port Canaveral. The port’s terminals function almost exactly like an airport’s terminals. If you’ve ever dropped someone off at an airport, for example, you’re familiar with signage that directs you to, say, Delta’s departure terminal or US Airways’ departure terminal. The same kinds of signs appear at Port Canaveral. Disney’s cruise ships usually depart from Port Canaveral’s Terminal A, so you’ll be looking for Port Canaveral’s road signs that say Disney’s ships depart from Terminal A. If you want to see what the drive looks like, Port Canaveral has an excellent video what the exits, terminal and parking options look like from a car passenger’s perspective. Parking rates at the terminal are:

$60 for 3 days

$75 for 4 days

$90 for 5 days

$120 for 7 days

Once you arrive at the port and Terminal A, you’ll park and walk to the security checkpoint. A port employee will check your identification and/or passports, and your luggage will undergo security screening similar to that at airports.

As of this writing, U.S. citizens do not need a passport for cruises; a government-issued photo ID is also acceptable. Also note that with respect to the luggage screening, Disney allows you to bring alcohol on board the ship, whereas other cruise lines typically do not. Disney’s policy is that the alcohol must be carried on board either in a bag or carry-on, (i.e., not in placed in your checked luggage), and the size of the bag cannot exceed 22” wide by 14” high by 9” deep.

Once in the check-in terminal, you’ll be assigned a group number to expedite the check-in and boarding process. For example, on our cruise of about 800 people, there were roughly 25 groups, numbered 1 to 25, with around 32 people in each group. Loudspeakers announce which groups are currently being served.

The check-in terminal is spacious, clean and comfortable. If you have to wait a few minutes for your group to be called, you’ll find enough seating for your family to sit down and relax. Vending machines and bathrooms are available, and Disney provides everything from character greetings to ship models to maps on the floor for your kids to explore while waiting.

When your group number is announced, you’ll be directed to the check-in desk where you’ll receive your cabin number, have your photo taken and get issued your magnetic-strip cabin keys. (Why does Disney take your photo? To ensure the person who gets off and back on the ship at Castaway Cay is the same person who boarded at Port Canaveral. The computerized systems at Disney’s boarding gates display your photo when you swipe your room key to get off and on the ship.)

Atrium of the Disney Fantasy

You can head up the gangplank and board the ship once you’ve received your cabin keys. Stepping off the entryway and on to the ship, you’re put in the middle of a gorgeous, three-story atrium. And then it’s time to explore the ship!
