Remember a few weeks back when Universal Orlando stirred up social media park-stalkers (present company included) by installing electronic security screening devices — a.k.a. metal detectors — outside Universal Studios Florida‘s Hollywood Rip Ride Rockit roller coaster? Well, hold onto your hat (but NOT your phone, keys, or coins) because¬†UOR sprained the interwebs again with yesterday’s¬†introduction of more metal detector screenings at Islands of Adventure‘s Incredible Hulk Coaster and Dragon Challenge.

As of April 9, 2015, all Universal Orlando guests wishing to ride the resort’s major outdoor roller coasters must deposit all loose and metal objects in a locker before entering the queue. Mandatory airport-style security screenings, including walk-through metal detectors and handheld scanning wands, will be used to ensure that no prohibited items — specifically phones, keys, coins, cameras, and selfie sticks — are carried onto the attractions.

Storing Your Stuff at the Disney World Parks: the Wonderful World of Lockers

by on July 11, 2012

I’m a “just in case” girl. When I tour Walt Disney World, I often bring a sweater just in case it gets chilly, and an umbrella, just in case it rains, and my trusty copy of the Unofficial Guide to Walt Disney World, just in case I need something to pummel a zombie with. While I’m clearly prepared for any eventuality, I’m also hauling around a lot of heavy gear, which may need to be stashed somewhere. Thus, the Disney parks locker. Yay!

And just in case you’re a “just in case” person, here are the answers to your all your burning Disney locker-related questions.

Lockers at the Animal Kingdom. Note the handicapped accessible lockers with easier to grip handles.

Where are there lockers at Walt Disney World?

Lockers for guest use can be found at Disney’s Animal Kingdom, Disney’s Hollywood Studios, Epcot, Magic Kingdom, Downtown Disney, Typhoon Lagoon, Blizzard Beach, Disney’s golf courses, at Disney resorts with marinas and/or health clubs, and at the start of the Wild Africa Trek tour.

Will I need to use a locker at the theme parks?

This depends on your touring style. Personally, I rent a locker during maybe one out of five times that I visit the parks. Here are some reasons why you might want a theme park locker:

  • You are planning to bring in a substantial amount of food into the park. In addition to being a storage area, the lockers may be a bit cooler than the temperature out in the parks.
  • You are going to/from the theme park to another venue which requires different clothing. For example, if you’re going straight from a theme park to a signature restaurant and want to bring a nicer outfit for your meal. Similarly, if you’re arriving at the Magic Kingdom early in the day and will be attending Mickey’s Not So Scary Halloween Party in the evening, you want want to store your costume in a locker rather than cart it around all day.
  • You’ve made a large purchase at one of the theme park gift shops and the timing does no work out for using either package pick-up or resort delivery.
  • You have a medical situation which prevents you from carrying things. (However, bear in mind that getting to a locker from a remote part of a park may require a substantial walk.)
  • You simply prefer not to carry your gear with you.
