WDW Park Hours: What to Expect in October

by on July 31, 2012

Here at TouringPlans.com we spend a lot of time honing our predictions to make our Crowd Calendar the most accurate available. One of the many methods we employ is projecting park hours for all of Disney’s Florida theme parks. You may be wondering why we bother since Disney World publishes its park hours for all to see. Well, Disney does not always make things easy (as outlined here).

The published hours are available for the next six months (currently through February), but they are simply preliminary hours. Disney doesn’t create an operational schedule for its employees that far in advance. Using things like hotel occupancy rates and dining reservations, Disney reviews all hours for a given month approximately two weeks prior to the start of that month (for instance, September’s adjusted hours should be released on or around August 20) and makes changes to its park hours.

How often are park hours changed two weeks before the start of a month? This post will give you idea of what to expect when October hours are adjusted. And the chart below shows what the final park hours were for Walt Disney World in October 2011.

The numbers in red are October 2011 dates that changed when park hours were adjusted in mid-September last year.

There are a few things you should notice about this chart:

  • As mentioned above, these are the final park hours from last year (I want to make that very clear); final hours for this October (2012) have not yet been released.
  • The opening times for all parks change very, very rarely (only three days last October).
  • Epcot times change very, very rarely (which is why they are not listed).
  • Speaking of Epcot, the preliminary hours for that park show it will be open until 10pm (instead of the usual 9pm) on Fridays and Saturdays in October for the Food  & Wine Festival.
  • Wishes is performed once per night, except on days where there is a Mickey’s Not-So-Scary Halloween Party (October 4, 5, 8, 11, 12, 14, 16, 18, 21, 23, 25, 26, 28, 30, and 31, 2012). Changes in October are very rare, so we have not listed Wishes because of this.
  • The days that have Extra Magic Hours almost never change.
  • Closing times for the Magic Kingdom, Disney’s Hollywood Studios, and Disney’s Animal Kingdom, as well as the number of performances of the Main Street Electrical Parade and Fantasmic!, are highly variable at peak times.
  • October  has many peaks and valleys as seen by the sporadic red on that chart, and that makes it a tricky month to predict. One thing you should be aware of is that Disney has been reluctant this summer to extend the Magic Kingdom’s closing time to the extremes, such as 1am (like on October 22, 2011). 11pm closings are becoming more normal rather than those very late weekend nights.

So the real question is what you should expect for this year. Since we started actively tracking park hour changes, we have noticed that the previous year is quite a good predictor of the upcoming changes. We do make some adjustments for our internal calculations, but the chart above should give you a good idea for planning purposes.

One thing to remember is to compare days of the week rather than numerical dates. For instance, if you are traveling from Sunday, October 14, through Saturday, October 20, 2012 you would look at the second Sunday through the third Saturday from last year (September 9-15, 2011). Please also keep in mind that this chart is one of many references for you to use in planning your trip and is not necessarily the exact operating times.

I hope you find this information useful. As you may have guessed by now, this is going to be a regular feature. I am still in the process of “catching up” to the currently available Walt Disney World calendar (currently through February). Once I have caught it, I will post these as the new preliminary hours are released.

Thanks!

August WDW Park Hours

by on July 22, 2012

The Disney World park hours were recently updated for August (well, most of August), with operating hours extended for the Magic Kingdom, Disney’s Hollywood Studios, and Disney’s Animal Kingdom. Now, on several days, the Magic Kingdom is open until 11pm with a second Main Street Electrical Parade added.

Hollywood Studios also had every day changed, and will now stay open until 10pm for the entire month. All days will also see an additional showing of Fantasmic!. Animal Kingdom had a few closing times adjusted as well, those until 8pm.

The chart below shows all current park hours with changes in red. Please note that the hours were only updated through Saturday, August 25. August 26 through 31 will be updated with the September hours update coming in a few weeks.

You will also notice minor changes to our Crowd Calendar involving some of the changed dates. We recently began using our own internal projected park hours to give you the most accurate crowd ratings available. Using these projected hours has made our long-term crowd ratings more stable, but we are not perfect (well, some of us).

We apologize for the changes, although one thing you should be aware of is that Disney sometimes announces extended operating hours on the actual day of operation. Saturdays in particular tend to be prime candidate for last minute extensions. These extensions are not necessarily something that can be planned around, but you should be aware that they are possible. We will make sure to keep you updated on all changes.

Thanks!

July 2012 WDW Park Hours

by on July 1, 2012

The Disney World park hours were recently updated for July (well, most of July), with many operating hours extended for the Magic Kingdom, Disney’s Hollywood Studios, and Disney’s Animal Kingdom. Now, on just about all days, the Magic Kingdom is open until 11pm, and a few days it will stay open until 12am or even 1am. In addition, many nights a second Main Street Electrical Parade has been added.

Hollywood Studios also had almost every day changed, and will now stay open until 10pm for the entire month. All days will also see an additional showing of Fantasmic!. Animal Kingdom had almost every closing time adjusted as well, those until 8pm.

The chart below shows all current park hours with changes in red. Please note that the hours were only updated through Saturday, July 28. July 29 through 31 will be updated with the August hours update coming in a few weeks.

Disney World Park Hours: What To Expect For July

by on May 22, 2012

Here at TouringPlans.com we spend a lot of time honing our predictions to make our Crowd Calendar the most accurate available. One of the many methods we employ is projecting park hours for all of Disney’s Florida theme parks. You may be wondering why we bother since Disney World publishes its park hours for all to see. Well, Disney does not always make things easy (as outlined here).

The published hours are available for the next six months (currently through December), but they are simply preliminary hours. Disney doesn’t create an operational schedule for its employees that far in advance. Using things like hotel occupancy rates and dining reservations, Disney reviews all hours for a given month approximately two weeks prior to the start of a that month (for instance, July’s adjusted hours should be released on or around June 15) and makes changes to its park hours.

How often are park hours changed about two week before the start of a month? This post will give you idea of what to expect when July hours are adjusted. And the chart below shows what the final park hours were for Walt Disney World in July 2011.

The numbers in red are July 2011 dates that changed when park hours were adjusted in mid-June last year. Yes, there were many changes.

There are a few things you should notice about this chart:

  • As mentioned above, these are the final park hours from last year (I want to make that very clear); final hours for this July (2012) have not yet been released.
  • The opening times for all parks change very, very rarely (once, for the Magic Kingdom, out of 124 park openings in July).
  • Epcot times change very, very rarely (which is why they are not listed).
  • Wishes is performed once per night, and changes in July are very rare.  We’ve not listed Wishes because of this, although Wishes technically is not shown on July 3rd and 4th since a special holiday fireworks take its place.
  • The days that have Extra Magic Hours almost never change.
  • Closing times for the Magic Kingdom, Disney’s Hollywood Studios, and Disney’s Animal Kingdom, as well as the number of performances of the Main Street Electrical Parade and Fantasmic!are highly variable at peak times (such as July), which is why there is so much red on that chart.

For instance, if you are traveling from Sunday, July 8, through Saturday, July 15, 2012 you would look at the second Sunday through the third Saturday from last year (July 10-16, 2011). Please also keep in mind that this chart is one of many references for you to use in planning your trip and is not necessarily the exact operating times.

I hope you find this information useful. I am planning to make this a regular feature as hours are released, so other months are coming. Please let me know in the comments below if there is anything else you would like to see on a regular basis.

Thanks!

June 2012 Park Hour and Crowd Calendar Changes for WDW

by on May 18, 2012

The Disney World park hours were recently updated for Memorial Day weekend and all of June, with many operating hours extended for the Magic Kingdom, Disney’s Hollywood Studios, and Disney’s Animal Kingdom. There are now many days where the Magic Kingdom is open until 11pm and a few Saturdays where it will stay open until 12am or even 1am. In addition, many nights a second Main Street Electrical Parade has been added.

Hollywood Studios also had every single day changed, and will now stay open until 10pm for the entire month. All days will also see an additional showing of Fantasmic. Hollywood Studios also gains a few 8am openings in honor of Star Wars Weekends. Animal Kingdom had quite a few closing times adjusted as well, those until 8pm.

The chart below shows all current park hours with changes in red.

You will also notice some changes to our Crowd Calendar involving some of the changed dates. We recently began using our own internal projected park hours to give you the most accurate crowd ratings available. Using these projected hours has made our long-term crowd ratings more stable, but we are not perfect (well, some of us).

The crowd levels for a few days changed by more than 3 points, and I would like to explain our rationale for the higher initial ratings.

May 28: Magic Kingdom’s crowd level decreased by 3.0. For Memorial Day, we initially projected a closing of 11pm with two performances of the Main Street Electrical Parade. As seen above, the actual closing time is 10pm and there is only one Main Street Electrical Parade.  The reason for the over-projection is because, on the equivalent day last year (May 30th, Memorial Day), the Magic Kingdom was open until 11pm with two Main Street Electrical Parades. Seeing as attendance has been generally higher this year, we assumed the trend of longer operating hours would continue.

June 1: Magic Kingdom’s crowd level decreased by 3.1. Much like Memorial Day above, on the equivalent day last year (Friday, June 3rd), the Magic Kingdom was open until 11pm. We expected those hours to continue.

June 2 : Magic Kingdom’s crowd level decreased by 3.3. Another similar story. On the equivalent day last year (Saturday, June 4th), the Magic Kingdom was open until 12am. We expected those hours to continue.

June 6: Disney’s Hollywood Studios crowd level increased by 4.7. We just plain got fooled by Disney’s calendar on this day. Hollywood Studios was originally scheduled for an early closing with no Fantasmic! shows. We assumed that indicated a special event, therefore we believed those hours. As you can imagine, those hours changed to a normal operating schedule, hence the dramatic increase. From now on we will always use our projections, ‘fool me once’ and all that.

June 30: Magic Kingdom’s crowd level decreased by 3.2. On this day we also expected the hours to be similar to last year (which was 12am). It seems strange that on the Saturday before the July 4th holiday the park will only be open until 10pm, but that is what Disney is saying…for now.

We apologize for the changes, although we are happy that in most cases the crowd levels are now lower than they previously were. One thing you should be aware of is that Disney sometimes announces extended operating hours on the actual day of operation. We see the above dates as prime candidates for these last minute extensions. These extensions are not necessarily something that can be planned around, but you should be aware that they are possible. We will make sure to keep you updated on all changes.

Thanks!

Disney World Park Hours Updated for March

by on February 14, 2012

Today Disney updated Walt Disney World park hours for March 2012. We are starting to get into a busy time of year, with many school districts’ spring breaks falling in March. The lengthening of park hours suggests that this March will once again have some very busy periods (as our Crowd Calendar predicted).

For an idea of how Disney goes about releasing park hours, you can read this blog post. Below is a list of March 2012 park hours with today’s changes in red (MSEP = Main Street Electrical Parade, EMH = Extra Magic Hours). Click to enlarge:

As you can see, Disney added many showings of Main Street Electrical Parade and Fantasmic! at the Magic Kingdom and Disney’s Hollywood Studios, respectively. Animal Kingdom‘s hours were also adjusted, but Epcot remains on its standard 9am to 9pm schedule.

The rest of the TouringPlans.com website–including our Crowd Calendar–will be updated shortly. If you would like to be the first to know when the Crowd Calendar changes please sign up for our Crowd Tracker.

WDW Extra Magic Hours Adjusted on March 1 and February 28

by on January 9, 2012

As expected by many, Walt Disney World removed the morning Extra Magic Hours from the Magic Kingdom on March 1, 2012, and added a morning Extra Magic Hour to Epcot on that day.

The assumed reason for this change is because of the One More Disney Day promotion, which involves the Magic Kingdom being open from 6am on February 29 until 6am on March 1.

As a result of the Magic Kingdom losing that bonus hour on March 1, the morning Extra Magic Hour at Epcot on February 28 has been removed and an Extra Magic Hour has been added to the Magic Kingdom on that day.

Our Crowd Calendar will show this change soon. Thanks for using Touring Plans!
