“Glow With The Show” Changing To “Made With Magic” at Disney Parks
Recently Disney rolled out “Glow With The Show” ears; they appeared at Walt Disney World last year and were introduced at Disneyland a year prior. Well, it seems that the concept is being re-branded, and it will now be known as “Made With Magic.”
In addition to being re-branded, new merchandise items have been created for guests to purchase and enjoy. These items include a Sorcerer Mickey wand (which will offer an additional function of changing the light patterns of other “Made with Magic” products), a Mickey Mouse glove, and a Minnie Mouse headband. The previously offered “Glow With The Show” ear hats will still be available, as well.
For those who are unaware, the “Made With Magic” items utilize interactive technology that allows the products to blink and change color in response to the environment you are in at the parks. Places in Walt Disney World that make use of the interactive elements include Fantasmic! and The Osborne Family Spectacle of Dancing Lights at Disney’s Hollywood Studios, as well as the Celebrate the Magic castle light show and the Wishes fireworks show at Magic Kingdom. At Disneyland, the products interact with World of Color at Disney California Adventure, as well as Fantasmic! and the nighttime fireworks show at Disneyland. When the merchandise isn’t interacting with the environment, it is in a color-changing mode.
The first item to arrive will be the Minnie Mouse headband, which will be available in late October/early November. The Mickey Mouse glove and Sorcerer Mickey wand can be purchased beginning in late November/early December. The ear hats are available now. Each item will cost $25 and be available at select locations throughout Walt Disney World and Disneyland.

It sounds like a lot of us are just focusing on the glowing lights, whereas the wands/hands/ears also have the potential to trigger other events around the park, like the Phineas and Ferb or Pirates Adventure games (or, like the wands in the Harry Potter area at Universal). Whether or not Disney develops that remains to be seen. This could be like the talking Mickey from years ago that just sort of fizzles out, but I like the idea of a guest being able to make something happen by waving their wand and create a little experience that they wouldn’t otherwise be able to see.
Great, more blinking lights. I had to give up on watching the Osborne Lights when the lights began “dancing” a few years ago. I had to beg a security guard to let me out through a barricade, because the blinking lights gave me an optic migraine.
I find the blinking items distracting from the shows. It doesn’t ruin the experience, but I think it’s a waste of money and technology.
I think when there is a majority of the audience wearing the glow with the show hats it works very well as it is in time to the main show, see the videos of the AP preview at World of Colour to see how well it works when everyone is wearing and they change in time to the fountain colours. But all the other flashing stuff is a distraction.
To each his own. 🙂 Been there, seen it. Meh. The new items are being touted with the added ability of the user to watch his wand/glove twinkle instead of just wearing it. I’m on record as simply wanting to enjoy the fireworks, fountains and Fantasmic! instead of the twinkly expensive toy. Reminds me of the too-many at WDW glued to their cell phones instead of simply enjoying the beauty around them.
Agree with everything you said, DD. But the cell phone thing is another great feature of FP+. Disney encourages guests to remain buried in their phones. Maybe it’s all a plot by Disney to cut back on maintenance, guests won’t notice peeling paint if they’re staring at their iphones!
Huh, interactive wands. Wonder where they got that idea?! Still, sounds like a good idea to offer products that the person who purchases them can enjoy, rather than the ears, which offered more of a show to others when someone was wearing them. If they add enough little things around the parks to interact with, then I could see kids (and adults) enjoying the wands and gloves.
At least they are adding things that don’t sit on your head. With the hats you really didn’t get a benefit if you owned one since you couldn’t see it. Glow with the show only seemed to work when they gave the ears for free for promotion, otherwise there wasn’t a lot of buy in. Still think those items are all super expensive. Interesting to see if more people purchase.
This is what I thought too. Why pay $25 for ears that I can’t appreciate since they’re on top of my head?
Also, I find that I want to want to watch the fireworks and/or show that is above me rather than ears on somebody’s head. It was neat to watch the shows where they gave the ears out but I’m not sure these new products will entice me to buy any products as I want to watch the fireworks, not the ears.
In general, I like the idea, but I wouldn’t go for it (or more specifically, get it for the kids) unless more things throughout the parks were interactive. For families, if each different type of item triggered different things or at different times, it would certainly encourage buying the different ones for each child (and maybe the adult children, too).
While there aren’t currently more interactive elements throughout the parks, the “Made With Magic” items (the original ears, at least) do interact with each other. For example, if everyone in your family has a set of ears, their individual color-changing “light shows” will synchronize when the ears are within close proximity of each other. My kids also enjoyed watching their ears synchronize with the ears of other nearby kids while waiting in ride queues.
Let’s see…… One Mickey hat or five Dole Whip floats? Floats win, though I’ll probably only have two.
Glad they made more products!!! I don’t bother to carry my glow ears anymore b/c they always fell off. Top heavy, wobbly. Can’t adjust size, etc. REALLY fun to be a part of the show with the ears on though. I just have a small head. Tried baseball cap under it, too. Nothing helped. Any suggestions?
