How Crowded Was Walt Disney World Last Week?

Crowds at Walt Disney World held steady last week with the resort wide crowd coming in at, or slightly above predicted levels. Last week’s crowd levels represent the first sign of Spring Break crowd levels for 2016. If not for some days with crowd level ‘8’ or lower at Epcot we could have seen a full week of resort-wide crowd level ’10’s. Magic Kingdom was a solid crowd level ’10’ each weekday last week and Animal Kingdom was almost as busy.

Let’s look at how the crowd levels stacked up each day last week on the Touringplans.com Disney World Crowd Calendar Report:

The Disney World Crowd Calendar correctly predicted the level ‘9’ at Animal Kingdom on Sunday but Magic Kingdom and Hollywood Studios also hit that level, two points higher than expected. Meanwhile, Epcot was less crowded than expected with average wait times like 12 minutes at Living with the Land (predicted 25) and 18 minutes at Spaceship Earth (predicted 30).

Monday’s crowds were about as busy as they get. Three of the four parks hit the highest level on our scale and the fourth park was Epcot which hasn’t been as busy as usual since Soarin’ closed for refurbishment. Magic Kingdom saw average wait times like 53 minutes at Big Thunder Mountain Railroad (predicted 47) and 78 at Peter Pan’s Flight (76). Animal Kingdom’s Kilimanjaro Safaris hit a remarkable average of 84 minutes.

Tuesday brought more extreme Spring Break crowds to the Disney parks. At Hollywood Studios wait times were elevated due to a one-day closure of Toy Story Midway Mania. Rock ‘n’ Roller Coaster averaged 107 minutes, by far a crowd level ’10’ for that attraction.

Three more crowd level ’10’s for Magic Kingdom, Hollywood Studios and Animal Kingdom on Wednesday. Magic Kingdom was lead by Space Mountain with its 115 minute average wait. To hit a crowd level ’10’ Space Mountain needs to average a wait time above 82 minutes between 10:00 am and 5:00 pm – 115 minutes is nearly off the charts!

The Studios saw a little relief on Thursday but not much. Average wait times were still high like 64 minutes at Rock ‘n’ Roller Coaster and 37 minutes at Star Tours. Magic Kingdom and Animal Kingdom were as busy as we have seen all week with averages like 105 minutes at Space Mountain, 60 at Splash Mountain, 41 Primeval Whirl and 81 minutes at Kilimanjaro Safaris.

Hollywood Studios was a crowd level ‘9’ on Friday, as predicted. In fact, only Magic Kingdom had a crowd level more than one level away from what the Disney World Crowd Calendar predicted. We saw average wait times like 108 minutes at Space Mountain (predicted 97), 75 at Test Track (71), 92 at Toy Story Midway Mania (77) and 45 minutes at Expedition Everest (predicted 40).

Surprisingly, Saturday was the least crowded day of the week. No park hit a crowd level ’10’ and two parks were a ‘7’ or lower. DINOSAUR averaged 38 minutes, Expedition Everest 33, Kilimanjaro Safaris 43 and Kali River Rapids 23 minutes.

  • Trygve,
Always find these very informative. And I’m curious if there are predictions that will cause you to update the Crowd Calendar in the next few months, especially with Animal Kingdom hours being extended? And Frozen being introduced into Epcot? – we are planning daily park visits for our late June trip and use all of your info to help us. And if so, how often does the calendar get updated?

  • This definitely shows the benefit of a touring plan. We were at Magic Kingdom on the 13th (crowd level 9) but hit more than 20 attractions with no waits longer than 25 minutes and most under 10! I was surprised that it didn’t actually feel that crowded.

  • I agree with Paula above– we were in the 10+ parks 4 out of 5 days (13th-18th). We had a tight plan each day, so we’ rode plenty and had a great time. Our longest wait was 27 minutes for Pirates on Friday the 18th, but the ride had been down for an extended period of time earlier in the day. It FELT crowded every day–lots and lots and lots of bodies! You have to feel sorry for those going in blind–thinking their Spring Break at Disney is going to be such fun, then meeting the wall of people and spending hours in line….. It’s way too much money to invest without a plan!
