DVC Monthly Preview — November 2017

Welcome to another new feature here on the TouringPlans blog: the DVC Monthly Preview. Each month, we’ll provide you with a quick recap of DVC news and other information about Disney’s best kept secret.

Booking Windows

This month, here are some booking window dates to keep in mind. For your home resort (11-month booking window), this month you will be able to book for dates in October 2018. Keep this in mind when scheduling trips to take advantage of Halloween, Food and Wine, and Columbus Day holiday weekend. For all other DVC resorts (7-month booking window), this month you will be able to book for dates in June 2018, so if you are making your summer plans, you might want to start looking at availability.

For last-minute trips, there is very little availability listed at DVC’s last-minute resort availability page (unless you’re thinking about a trip to Aulani), however you sometimes can get lucky logging in and searching for resort availability as people have last-minute cancellations.

DVC News

This month, DVC is offering a holiday beverage tasting seminar at Bay Lake Tower on Tuesdays from 4:30-5:30 PM. The cost is $40 per person (tax and gratuity not included) and reservations are required. You can see the list of seminars and find registration information here.

Need plans for Christmas Eve dinner? Both Walt Disney World and Disneyland are having special holiday dinner events for members. Pricing and reservation information for the Frozen-themed event at Disney’s Contemporary Resort and the Wild West Winterland at Disney’s Grand Californian Resort are available now.

If you want to get a jump on your holiday shopping, check out the Midweek Magic deals available on Wednesdays through the end of the year at Disney Springs.

Resort Spotlight

This month, we’re going back to where it all started with Disney’s first DVC property–Old Key West. If you were lucky enough to buy in with DVC’s presales in 1991, you would have paid $48 per point.

Old Key West has a lot going for it–especially when it comes to room size. Studios are 376 sq. ft., 1 bedroom units are 942 sq. ft., 2 bedroom units are 1,333 sq. ft., and 3 bedroom grand villas are a whopping 2,202 sq. ft. The resort is fairly spread out, but still walkable, or you are able to use the internal bus system to get around. To get to theme parks, you do have to use bus transportation, but Disney Springs is an enjoyable boat ride (or a healthy walk, if you’re up to it) away.

The resort has four pools–the main pool near the Hospitality House, and three smaller “quiet pools” scattered around. Unfortunately none of these are zero-entry pools (although there is a kiddie pool at the main pool area), and there’s no large water playground like you can find at many other Disney resorts.

When it comes to dining, you have Good’s Food to Go and Turtle Shack Poolside snacks, and the Gurgling Suitcase for a quick drink, but the real gem is Olivia’s Café. Take some time to look around at all the pictures of DVC members from over the years. Do any of you have your photo on the wall there?

Thanks to its layout and location, Old Key West doesn’t feel like it is located in Walt Disney World sometimes, making it a great choice for a staycation or a getaway with people who might not want to be smothered in Disneyana during their stay. There’s plenty to do at the resort itself for an enjoyable weekend, from activities in the Community Hall to basketball, tennis courts, and bike rental.

Is Old Key West your home resort? Have you stayed there? What are your thoughts about the resort? Let us know in the comments.

And that’s it for this month’s DVC Preview. Let us know if there’s other information you’d like to see, and we’ll be back next month!

Thank you Julia for your post – I’m excited that you’ve added a DVC component to the “preview” articles! My husband and I are DVC owners with OKW as our home resort. We love it there – besides maybe one day buying into an Epcot area DVC resort we are extremely happy and lucky to have bought resale when you still qualified for DVC perks. We love the relaxed atmosphere, large accommodations and the stunning grounds. My last stay at OKW was November 2016 and I’m 174 days away from the next 😀 But who’s counting 😉 I’m hoping that by the time I go that at least the Hospitality House area (where I booked) will be completed it’s refurb! Thanks again for this post and I look forward to following along 🙂

Happy to see this new feature! We love OKW! We’ve stayed twice in 2br villas. Lots of room to spread out! It was the 7 of us plus my in-laws and we were very comfortable. It’s super fun to have a laundry room as opposed to the laundry closet. It definitely feels more like a vacation condo rental than a hotel suite.

Really happy to see this, thank you!

One note – on the Room Finder feature, those are not really the “views” from the OKW rooms… it’s the look upon exiting the front doors. Is this going to be updated at some point?

Thank you guys for the good info. We are in the middle of our purchase into DVC. We are very excited. My question is that as a DVC member when booking at OKW to book by the hospitality house is the request generally granted ?

Congrats on the upcoming DVC purchase! Very exciting!

It all depends on what’s available when you try to book, if OKW is your home resort you will be able to start booking at 11 months out – if not you start booking at 7 months. It also depends on the length of your stay.

I booked my reservation right at 11 months out and had no trouble. Hope this information helps you.
