SATURDAY SIX: Six Hidden Mickeys at the Universal Orlando Resort

by on November 14, 2015

This week’s  SATURDAY SIX takes a look at Six Hidden Mickeys at the Universal Orlando Resort. Most of us who have traveled to “The World” have become well versed in the concept of Hidden Mickeys: three circles placed together to resemble the iconic silhouette of Mickey Mouse. Walt Disney Imagineers have placed them all across the WDW parks and resorts (including some of our favorites at Art of Animation). The term itself has expanded to include hidden references beyond the classic Mickey head, such as the Nautilus from the old 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea attraction hidden in the rock work of Under the Sea – Journey of the Little Mermaid, the ride which replaced it. Believe it or not, there are references to Disney all over the Universal Orlando Resort as well. Today we are going to look at six of our favorite “Hidden Mickeys” at Universal, starting off with…

# 6 – The Simpsons Ride Pre-Show

Like the TV show it is based on, The Simpsons Ride pulls no punches in mocking the world of theme parks throughout the attraction. Disney, Universal and SeaWorld take a lot of playful jabs from the attraction’s queue all the way to the gift shop. Some of our favorites are seen during the the first pre-show, in which guests watch a video that sets up the storyline of the ride. In between the video, fake ads for attractions at Krustyland (itself a parody of Disneyland) air including ones making fun of The Haunted Mansion, Hall of Presidents, Pirates of the Caribbean, and even Epcot’s defunct Kitchen Kaberet.

SATURDAY SIX: Six Reasons We Love Universal’s Springfield USA

by on October 24, 2015

This week’s SATURDAY SIX takes a look at Six Reasons We Love Universal’s Springfield USA. In case you were living under a rock this week, this Wednesday was Back To the Future Day. October 21st was the day Marty McFly took the DeLorean and traveled Back to the Future. With it brought the news of Nike actually creating power lace sneakers, a five star must-watch video of Marty and Doc Brown arriving in 2015 on Jimmy Kimmel, and a BTTF themed cover of USA Today (which even appropriately came out on Thursday, because Marty and Doc went back a day before the paper came out to stop the events from happening.) What does any of this have to do with theme parks? I’m glad you asked. BTTF used to have a ride in Universal Studios Florida until it was replaced by The Simpsons Ride in 2008. Since then, the area around The Simpsons Ride has expanded into an entire land in Springfield, USA. While no one can touch Diagon Alley as a whole, Springfield is one of our favorite areas in any theme park, and hands-down the funniest. Today we are going to going to countdown our six favorite parts about this wonderful land that truly brings an animated television show to life. So sit back, live out your Brewster’s Millions fantasy and crack open that bottle of Pepsi Perfect you bought off eBay for $500, and let’s begin our countdown starting with…

# 6 – Fast Food Boulevard

With Fast Food Boulevard, Universal pretty much did the impossible. Previously, the area was home to the International Film & Food Festival, a food court which made the offerings in Fantastic Four Cafe seem Michelin star worthy in comparison, and was certainly one of the worst themed areas in the entire park. Fast Food Boulevard brought to life Krusty Burger, the Frying Dutchman, and Luigi’s Pizza straight from The Simpsons television show. It also gave us Cletus’ Chicken Shack, which was rumored to originally be Kentucky Fried Panda (and if true, was a good decision by Universal.)

The Simpsons show has a long history of mocking restaurants, and seeing places like Krusty Burger in the real world is a dream come true. Now you can finally order the Ribwich (a sandwich the show created to mercilessly parody the McRib,) a Krusty Burger, and the Clogger, all straight out of canon. Springfield USA has almost 30 food and drink items you can’t get anywhere else inside the Universal parks, including the incredible Chicken & Waffle sandwich, tater tots, and curly fries.

SATURDAY SIX: Top Six Theme Park Bars in Orlando

by on May 17, 2014

This week’s SATURDAY SIX covers the Top Six Theme Park Bars in Orlando. Reading the recent Epcot After Hours Wind Down reviews got the staff of Saturday Six thinking about the best theme park bars in town, so we grabbed our iPad and pulled up the Walt Disney World Bars and Lounges eGuide as a reference, cashed in our 30 day A.A. chips, and hit the parks to make our final judgements. What follows are the very best of your watering hole options inside the theme parks….

# 6 – Duff Gardens (Universal Studios Florida)

Duff Gardens is one of the newer entries in the parks, making its debut at Universal Studios Florida in August of 2013. The variety of drinks served here is limited (various Duff beers, coke products, Buzz Cola, and the Flaming Moe) but what Duff Gardens lacks in overall drink options, it makes up for in atmosphere and location. The topiaries of the 7 Duffs (Tipsy, Queasy, Surly, Sleazy, Edgy, Dizzy and Remorseful) are incredible. There is a photo op with Duffman and guests are steps away from the wonderful statue of Jebediah Springfield. There is signage within the bar that has the trademark Simpsons wit while cleverly mocking traditional beer advertisements. There is plenty of seating at the bar and there are even more tables bordering the nearby lagoon. Grabbing a couple tacos from Bumblebee Man’s Taco Truck and a Duff beer on tap from Duff Gardens is one of our favorite theme park meals.
