SATURDAY SIX Looks at STAR WARS in Walt Disney World

by on April 16, 2016

This week’s SATURDAY SIX looks at STAR WARS in Walt Disney World. While those of us in Florida may be mourning the loss of the annual Star Wars Weekends event at DHS, fans of Star Wars have a lot to be thankful for at Walt Disney World. Not only do we have Star Wars Land coming, but while we’re waiting for that to open a whole bunch of great attractions, events, and stores have opened to help satisfy our craving for anything and everything Star Wars. It’s a good thing too, because The Force Awakens has washed away the bad taste of the prequels and has the entire world back in the grip of Star Wars mania. Today we’re going to set our sights on our favorite Star Wars offerings in Orlando just like Luke used to bullseye womp rats back on Tatooine. So sit back, never tell us the odds, and let’s begin our countdown starting with…

# 6 – runDisney: The Dark Side

The folks at runDisney have done the impossible, they have made exercise fun. The popularity of the events continue to grow and lately Disney has started to outdo themselves with great concepts and spectacular looking medals for the runners (we’re looking in your direction Princess Half Marathon). Last year they introduced Star Wars events out in Disneyland with The Light Side series of races. This year the fun continues at Walt Disney World with The Dark Side.

The Dark Side fun started off at the Health & Fitness Expo held at ESPN Wide World of Sports, where runners got an opportunity to take pictures with Star Wars characters including Jabba the Hutt and BB-8. There was also a side array of unique merchandise available including t-shirts, hats, magnets, and even Dooney & Bourke handbags. However what makes runDisney events truly special is being able to run through the actual theme parks, along with meeting characters along the way. As a theme park fan, it is hard to beat running through EPCOT and seeing stormtroopers along with being able to take a picture with Captain Phasma after completing the run. The Dark Side may just be runDisney’s best even ever, and has us looking forward to more Star Wars races in the future!

Kylo Ren Disney's Hollywood Studios

Visit Kylo Ren and check out DHS construction with Best Week Ever! (Photos/video by Seth Kubersky)

Ed – Sorry to break in right at the start, but I would like to announce that this will be Seth’s last Best Week Ever for the time being. While Seth is focusing his considerable talent on other things, we will have some new Best Week Ever authors. Look for the first new Best Week Ever later today…that’s right, double Best Week Ever week! Now, on to Seth’s wonderful week.

It’s been a little while since Best Week Ever took a look at Disney’s Hollywood Studios, so I stopped by the park several times in recent days for an update on this in-transition attraction. Construction walls may be rising on a daily basis, but that doesn’t seem to be stopping the crowds from coming! We’ll look at some of the changes around DHS, culminating in an encounter with the newest patricidal Star Wars star, Kylo Ren.

First, let’s take a look around Disney’s Hollywood Studios during the first week of February. This is a typically moderate time of year according to our Crowd Calendar, but I encountered some long lines around DHS, especially on February 8th:

Are you anxious to meet the newest villain in the Star Wars universe? Well, now you can at Disney’s Hollywood Studios. Kylo Ren, from Star Wars: The Force Awakens is now appearing and greeting Guests at the Star Wars Launch Bay.

Guests will be able to meet Kylo Ren on the bridge of his First Order Star Destroyer in the Dark Side section of the Launch Bay. This means that Darth Vader will no longer be meeting Guests here, but he can still be seen in Jedi Training:

In the Launch Bay area, Guests will also be able to meet Chewbacca, come across Stormtroopers or even Jawas. Guests visiting this area can also experience a film showcasing some of the people behind the film, see concept art, tour galleries of memorabilia, see Star Wars artifacts, play video games and more.

The Star Wars Launch Bay is likely going to be a fluid experience going forward, with new artifacts, art work and more debuting as the upcoming Star Wars movies get ready to be released. Stay tuned for more information about this great area where you are able to get in touch with The Force. (Or the Dark Side…)

Ever since the Star Wars Launch Bay was introduced at Disney’s Hollywood Studios, it has become the place to go to experience the Star Wars universe. The props, costumes, film, and meet and greets have all be extremely popular, especially since The Force Awakens debuted in theaters. However, there has been a disturbance in the force, causing a bit of a shakeup, because a brand new character will soon be greeting guests in the Launch Bay.

Kylo Ren, the newest Star Wars villain will soon be taking up residence here. Guests will be able to meet him on the bridge of his First Order Star Destroyer.

The Star Wars Launch Bay has always been designed to showcase a variety of characters. So, with the addition of Kylo Ren into the Dark Side Gallery, we must say good bye to the opportunity to meet Darth Vader. Guests looking to encounter Darth Vader will still be able to see him in the Jedi Training: Trips of the Temple experience.

Guests will be able to meet Kylo Ren beginning in February.

Questions and Observations from the Star Wars: The Force Awakens Trailers

by on October 22, 2015

Whether you’re a fan of Star Wars or not, you’ve probably heard that the latest trailer for Star Wars Episode VII debuted on October 19; and let’s just say that it was kind of a big deal.

First of all, it caused me to actually look forward to a Monday. Truly historic. Secondly, the trailer went viral almost immediately and sites selling movie tickets were out of commission for most of the night. I know this from personal experience because I spent over an hour refreshing a website to secure myself an opening day ticket for my local theater. It was a do or do not moment because the internet literally wouldn’t let anyone try. In the end, I did secure myself a ticket for an early showing on December 17. (Yay!) Walt Disney World even offered a special Force Awakens Opening Night Event, which sounds awesome!

But let’s get to the important stuff. The trailer. This new trailer followed two Force Awakens teasers and revealed the most information about this much anticipated upcoming film. Director J.J. Abrams has done a remarkable job keeping most of the story under lock and key, but that hasn’t stopped fans like myself from piecing together some important points. Lastly, and listen to this my fellow Disney Parks Fans, I believe the teasers, and particularly this new trailer, show a glimpse of what will Star Wars Land will be! So let’s take this step by step and break down what we know now about The Force Awakens, what we still want to know, and what clues to Star Wars Land we’ve gained from the teasers and trailers in Questions and Observations from the Star Wars: The Force Awakens Trailers.

Warning: Possible SPOILERS Beyond This Point.
