Celebrating New Year’s Eve at Epcot ©Rikki Niblett

Wow! How did the end of this year get here already?! I know we say that all the time, but I really do feel that this year has just flown right by. It feels like just yesterday, I was bringing in 2017 at Epcot; now, I’ll be back at Epcot to bring in 2018. (With all the other crazies….and those are just my friends! 😉 )

So, what can I and everyone else expect when ringing in 2018 at the Walt Disney World Resort? Here’s this year’s lineup:

Magic Kingdom

The Magic Kingdom will be open on December 30 and 31 from 8:00 a.m. until 1:00 a.m. During the evening on both nights, Guests will be able to see the Fantasy in the Sky Fireworks at both 6:30 p.m. and at 11:50 p.m. For those who like dance parties, you’ll want to head to either Frontierland and Tomorrowland for some awesome tunes.

Epcot

Epcot is open from 9:00 a.m. until 1:00 a.m. on December 31. There will be a New Year’s Eve Countdown Fireworks spectacular that really is incredible. The show kicks off at 11:40 p.m. There will also be New Year’s Eve dance parties and other entertainment around World Showcase at the America Garden Stage, Future World Fountain Stage and the “Silent Groove” dance party that will take place at Future World Center. (Trust me….you have to see this one! Everyone is dancing to music that they hear, but you don’t.)

Ask It Results: Best Fireworks, NYE or July 4?

by on December 20, 2017

On any given night, Disney fireworks light up the sky to oohs and aahs of everyone around. For certain holidays, like New Year’s Eve or the Fourth of July, those fireworks displays are sent into overdrive. The synchronization between music and pyrotechnics is its own kind of theater performance. But is one holiday display better than another? Last week, we asked you:

Which holiday has the best fireworks shows at Walt Disney World?

Here’s your results.

July 4 (111 votes, 43%)

Magic Kingdom 4th of July Fireworks

And the rockets’ red glare, the bombs bursting in air, gave proof through the night that it is Independence Day! It’s hard not to feel patriotic watching any of the Fourth of July fireworks displays at Walt Disney World. Filled with lots of red, white, and blue, it’s all about celebrating America by blowing up the skies over it. (Fun fact: Of all colors, blue is the hardest firework color to blend. You can tell the quality of fireworks used in a show based on how the vibrant the blue shells are.) The experience of waiting for fireworks in July can be challenging–some years it is brutally hot, which is certainly not fun if you’ve been camped in a crowded theme park all day. Other years, it can rain and the fireworks can be delayed. Still, it is worth the wait and far better than anything that your neighbors will be making with fireworks purchased for Crazy Joe’s firework bonanza.

Ask It: Best Fireworks, NYE or July 4?

by on December 13, 2017

There’s nothing like a Disney fireworks show. For certain holidays, Disney pulls out all the stops. You know that scene in Mary Poppins where the Banks family has to get to their posts to hold things in place as Admiral Boom sounds a charge from next door? It’s like that for the locals some nights as the sound like a wave of thunder rattles the windows and doors. (It’s a glorious time of year — we all love it!)

At Disney parks, there are two nights when the fireworks are their best: New Year’s Eve and Fourth of July. But which one does it better? This week we’re asking you:

Which holiday has the best fireworks shows at Walt Disney World?

  • Fourth of July (55%, 31 Votes)
  • New Year's Eve (45%, 25 Votes)

Total Voters: 56

Voting is live here and on Twitter, and we’ll have your results next week. In the meantime, feel free to tell us in the comments what’s your favorite park or favorite place in the park to catch those holiday fireworks shows?

How To Survive New Year’s Eve at Epcot (and Magic Kingdom)

by on December 27, 2016

Epcot’s New Year’s Eve fireworks are unlike any other show at Walt Disney World.

So you’re thinking about doing New Year’s Eve at Disney? Most people would think that’s ridiculous given the massive crowds, but after a few years of experience under my belt doing this very thing, I’m here to tell you, it can be a really fun day in Walt Disney World. Below, I’ll outline a few of my hard-learned secrets to a successful Epcot New Year’s Eve along with a few crowd-sourced tips from my colleagues here at TouringPlans for handling Magic Kingdom, as well.

Julia and Dani have already given some great tips on staying sane during phase closures and planning for crowds at Universal, and many of these rules also apply here, too. Though Epcot does not normally phase-close on New Year’s Eve, the same tips work for surviving the busiest days in any theme park. Dani’s tips about setting up Touring Plans ahead of time are also super helpful for making the most of your theme park visits during the last few weeks of the year.

Why Not Magic Kingdom on New Year’s Eve?

Despite the crowds, New Year’s Eve is a fun day, unlike any other you’ve spent in a park. One of the toughest parts of the day, though, can be actually getting in to a park. As Julia explained, phased closures are very common for this time of year, particularly at Magic Kingdom. This means that, depending on your ticket type and whether you have an existing dining reservation, you may not be able to enter or even hop on transportation to your chosen park.
