The Edison at Disney Springs to Open in January

by on November 3, 2017

Author Note: It appears that The Edison has removed their tweet with the information of an opening date of January 1, 2018. Stay tuned to the blog as we find out more information on if that is indeed the correct date that was inadvertently tweeted or if the date was accidental. I’ll make sure to have the information for you as soon as I find out. As of right now, the date that they are still stating on their website is fall 2017.

We’ve been waiting forever for news about The Edison, a new restaurant for Disney Springs. The restaurant venue was supposed to open months ago, but setbacks apparently kept occurring and the official opening date news kept being pushed back. That is until today.

According to a tweet from The Edison themselves reminding people about Daylight Saving Time, there was a little message included that mentioned their official opening day, which is going to be January 1, 2018.

A Teetotaler’s Review of Jock Lindsey’s Hangar Bar

by on June 27, 2016

Do you seek adventure? How about fortune and glory? If so, you may want to add Jock Lindsey’s Hangar Bar to your next travel itinerary! Last year, Disney Springs gained Jock Lindsey’s Hangar Bar, themed after Indiana Jones’ pilot, Jock Lindsey, from Raiders of the Lost Ark. This incredibly themed dining destination has been on my to-do list for months; but as you probably noticed by this article’s title, I’m somewhat of a teetotaler and was a little apprehensive about dropping in a self-proclaimed bar and ordering a soft drink! But a few weeks ago, after an especially long and hot trek through Disney Springs, I decided to venture in to finally check it out for myself. So if you’re curious about my adventure, or you’re a fellow non-drinker who may have had the same concerns, here’s A Teetotaler’s Review of Jock Lindsey’s Hangar Bar.

As with everything at Walt Disney World, it’s always about the story and Jock Lindsey’s maintains that tradition. The story behind this Disney Springs addition is that Jock came across this particular part of Florida while on an adventure with Indy. He, and his famous pet snake Reggie, returned in the 1940s and bought a waterfront piece of property to operate a seaplane tour operation. His hangar eventually became a popular hangout for fellow globe trotters, particularly for members of The Society of Explorers and Adventures, and now Disney World travelers.

Note: The story behind Jock Lindsey’s Hangar Bar has ties to the storyline of the Magic Kingdom’s Jungle Navigation Co. Ltd. Skipper Canteen, as The Society of Explorers and Adventures also frequented that location and references to Jock, Reggie, and Indy have been found there as well. Keep an eye out for them if you have the opportunity to visit!

At Disney Springs, Jock Lindsey’s Hangar Bar can be found at The Landing, a charming waterfront area between the Marketplace and the West Side and directly across from the newly opened Town Center. Of all the new spaces to be discovered at Disney Springs, The Landing is by far my favorite. I love the convenient, central location; and as I was staying at Disney’s Old Key West Resort, having the resort boat launch right next to Jock Lindsey’s was quite a perk.

Unlike other bars or lounges I’m familiar with at Walt Disney World, Jock Lindsey’s opens each day at 11:30 A.M. and stays open throughout the afternoon and into the evening until Disney Springs closes for the night. During my first visit, I dropped in around 1:00 P.M; and while there were a few guests sitting both inside and out, I still pretty much had the place to myself which was great for exploring and taking a few photos without interfering with anyone’s meal. It would also be the ideal time for families to visit so kids could freely look around too.

This weekend, the Town Center will debut at Disney Springs, as well as many new restaurants and shops. However, the Town Center isn’t the only area debuting new stuff. Recently, a few new retailers were officially announced for The Landing.

The Savannah Bee Company which will feature a variety of specialty and everyday honey products. The shop will also feature all-natural body care products ranging from body wash and lotion to lip balm and body butter.

Also opening on May 15 will be a shop known as Filthy Rich which will specialize in celebrity-inspired jewelry that will be sold at not-as-expensive pricing. The location will offer authentic replicas of iconic jewelry and accessories worn by past legends of the silver screen and current celebrity style icons.

Of course, recently announced was the news that Morimoto Asia Street Foods will also be debuting, which will be offering sushi, donburi rice bowls, bao tacos, takoyaki (octopus, nori, okomiyaki sauce), Morimoto sticky ribs, curry rice croquettes, pork egg rolls and taiyaki (snapper-shaped pancake filled with sweet adzuki red been paste).

As I mentioned in the last article about Disney Springs, it seems like leading up to the official debut of the Town Center, new information about the shopping and dining district is being released daily! Stay tuned to the blog for additional details as I learn them!

DAY NINE: Cool-headed Monkey at Jock Lindsey’s Hangar Bar (Disney Springs)

The new additions to Disney Springs so far have been terrific. Earlier on this list we have discussed how we were blown away by The BOATHOUSE, but Jock Lindsey’s Hangar Bar may be the biggest surprise. Disney’s recent attempts to make food and drink experiences from the Star Wars brand have been, at best, unique. A bar based around a character from the Indiana Jones films that no one remembers could have been a complete disaster, but instead it’s actually kinda good. Actually, it’s really good. While not as elaborately themed as Trader Sam’s Grog Grotto, Jock Lindsey’s has a much better food menu and generally has much less of a wait to get into.

Our recommendation for the Hangar Bar is the Cool-headed Monkey. One of the most memorable moments from Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom is a dinner scene in which our heroes were served a meal consisting of snakes, live bugs, and monkey brains. The brains were served out of what appeared to be the head of a monkey, causing one character to faint. This is where we should point out that Temple of Doom is by far the darkest of all the Indiana Jones films and is usually the one people like or dislike the most. In a great touch, Jock Lindsey’s Hangar Bar has a drink and souvenir mug to commemorate this classic film moment with the Cool-headed Monkey.

Ingredients: Starr African Rum, Van Der Hum Tangerine Liqueur, fresh Lime Juice, Watermelon, and Pineapple Juice

A brand new chocolate shop will be opening soon in The Landing section at Disney Springs. Called The Ganachery, this Disney owned and operated venue will specialize in custom-blended chocolates and feature flavors from around the world.

The shop will offer handmade ganache, bonbons and other sweet treats developed by Disney Chocolatiers. (Oh I can just imagine the delightful smells coming from here already.) The Ganachery will also give Guests a chance to participate in tastings as well as purchase treats to enjoy immediately or take home to savor.

While no official date has been announced as of yet, The Ganachery is scheduled to open later this year. This is one stop I know I’m gonna be making on my next trip to Disney Springs! I’ll make sure to keep you posted as I learn more!

Seth Kubersky’s Best Week Ever July 30, 2015: Drizzling Disney Springs

by on July 30, 2015

Best Week Ever Disney Springs

Take a drizzly tour of Disney Springs in this Best Week Ever (photos by Seth Kubersky)

The end of July 2015 has certainly earned a spot on my Best Week Ever list, because just days ago my brand new book, The Unofficial Guide to Universal Orlando, emerged from the printer on actual dead trees, and will be available for purchase early next month. What better way to celebrate such a milestone than with a wet walk around the worksite known as Disney Springs?

Unlike Derek Burgan, I’ve been avoiding the area formerly known as Downtown Disney like the plague since construction began on its massive re-imagining. This week, I picked a blustery afternoon to make my return to Walt Disney World’s shopping and entertainment complex in the hopes of experiencing some of its newest additions.

The changes began long before I landed at Disney Springs, as electronic traffic signs detoured me away from my usual direct route to the parking lot behind Cirque du Soleil.

Instead, I found myself on a “scenic route” behind Old Key West and Saratoga Springs, in a land where golf carts roam,…

Vivoli Gelateria Now Open at Downtown Disney

by on June 11, 2015

Are you looking for authentic Italian gelato on your next Walt Disney World vacation? Then you need to head to Downtown Disney to experience Vivoli Gelateria, a brand new gelato location now found in The Landing section.

Vivoli Gelateria was founded in Florence, Italy, and the Downtown Disney location is only its second ever full-service shop.

The quick-service place showcases gelato making, an art that has been perfected by three generations of family. This really is a family run business, as it was founded in 1932 by Raphael Vivoli and his two brothers. Vivoli Gelateria started out as a dairy. It is now run by Raphael’s granddaughter, Silvana.
